The premise is simple enough: A middle-aged man comes upon a beautiful shoeless twentysomething woman crying in the lobby of a movie theater. He reluctantly confronts her, ends up taking her to his apartment, and they begin to develop a relationship over the next few weeks. However, the girl has a mysterious past, a powerful sexuality, and is roughly the same age as the man's daughter. But when the employees of the Sons of Babel rent the apartment right above his, reeking of alcohol, and making loud noises late into the night, well...things get really weird from there.
Part horror, part mystery, and all love story, Waggoner displays a knack for showing you exactly what is happening, but manages to create suspense and intrigue concurrently. This is truly one of those stories where I had no idea what was going to happen next...and I loved it.
This Novella starts out rather normal. Man meets woman in a movie theater lobby. Woman is in distress. Man offers comfort. There's an attraction. And that is about it for normal.
Liana is trying to get away from her past. Richard is divorced and living alone in an apartment. The people she was with before didn't treat her well and so he offers her a place to stay. The first time they make love, we find there is something odd about Liana.
When some men move into the apartment upstairs things get weirder by the day.
The Men Upstairs is well written and definitely a page-turner. Not for the faint of heart and if it was a movie, the MPAA would likely give it an R rating. But, that being said, I really enjoyed where this story went and particularly enjoyed the ending. I'm thinking that might make both Tim Waggoner and I a couple of sick bastards.
The Men Upstairs is a part of the Delirium Novella Series from Delirium Press. It is available as a signed limited edition Hardcover and in e-book format for the Kindle from Amazon.com.
The Men Upstairs (Delirium Novella Series)
The Men Upstairs reads like a twisted nightmare for adults only. It's blends horror, paranoia, obsession, and loneliness in a disturbing story I will not soon forget. Waggoner always seems to have one of the most original and vivid imaginations of any modern horror writer, and he manages to hit another home run here.
Besides being a horror story, The Men Upstairs could easily fall into the bizarro genre as well. Author Waggoner sets up a very realistic premise in the lobby of a movie theater, instantly pulling in the reader. The writing is smooth and crisp, and before you know it, the familiar reality begins to slide into something foreign and completely grotesque. This book is yet another great read from one of horror's most underrated authors. A memorable and wholly original tale. A major recommendation.
