Review

Edward Sri is a gifted teacher and an equally talented writer. This book shows why. He breaks open Karol Wojtyla's great text, Love and Responsibility, in a way that's clear, engaging and very practical for the challenges of daily life. --Charles J. Chaput, O.F.M., Archbishop of Denver

...a terrific contribution to our growing understanding of the real-life implications of Pope John Paul II's thought. In this immensely relevant and readable book, Edward Sri offers sensible, nuanced guidance on some of the trickiest spects of relationships between the sexes. Readers in all walks of life will benefit from Sri's clarity and common sense. --Colleen Carroll Campbell, author, The New Faithful: Why Young Adults Are Embracing Christian Orthodoxy

The author, an associate professor at the Augustine Institute in Denver, wrote Men, Women and the Mystery of Love as an outgrowth of his own study and teaching on John Paul II's book Love and Responsibility. His goal was to shine a light on the pope's view of love and sexuality and show its relevance to everyday life. The work is suitable for lay people, priests, and religious in groups and as individuals. Each chapter focuses on an aspect of the pope's thinking and provides questions for reflection and suggestions for further reading. Topics include friendship; the proper role of emotions; how contraception harms love; and building trust, intimacy, and a mature love.

The chapter on building trust opens with the current divorce rates and data showing that only about one in ten married couples in the U.S. say they experience emotional intimacy in their relationship. In a great marriage, Sri writes, the spouses experience a deep personal communion with each other. John Paul II identified the underpinnings of this communion as "mutual self-giving love and the accompanying sense of responsibility for each other as gift." Sri addresses the topic with examples from the Garden of Eden, his own marriage, and two modern-day couples in crisis. This final story leads to a discussion of mature and immature love. In a summary chart, Sri describes mature love as primarily objective; looking outward; creating confidence and serenity; and self-giving. Reflection questions ask how our words and deeds break down trust and how we can maintain a truly loving attitude without approving faults of the other.

I have given this book to dozens of individuals and couples. It has been very effective in helping people to understand the Church's teaching with regard to human sexuality. I cannot recommend it more highly.

I had seen Dr Sri speak at a Catholic conference I attended with a friend. He was selling this book at the conference and my friend recommended the book, which she already owned. I asked if I could just borrow hers and she said "No - you need your own." And she was totally right. JPII was a brilliant man and Dr Sri breaks down Love and Responsibility in a very understanding way. And if you take everything in it to heart, it will change the way you view friendships, dating, and all relationships. It was so good that I purchased 2 more books for friends - I truly believe everyone should read this if you're not ready to tackle JPII's original. This book is highly recommended!

I happened to learn of this book while watching EWTN and as a way to enhance what I had learned on the on-going TV program I bouth the book. It was wonderful because at this late age in my life I still wondered: What is true love between a man and a woman? Mind you, I have been married for 36 years and thought I understood, but I didn't. I understand it now, thanks to this translation of what our beloved Blessed John Paul II wrote on his book: Love and Responsibility. This book is Dr. Sri's way of making Blessed John Paul's work ammenable to our ears.

I highly recommend this book to all but especially to those just starting out in life because they will understand what finding a mate is all about. It is about finding a love that is enduring, self-sacraficing, and true to the promises of the vocation of marriage and family.

Thank you Edward Sri for brining this work to us.

Best regards,
OlgaC

We used this book as the basis for a young adult (18-35 years old) discussion group. Our members ran the spectrum from no prior knowledge of St. Pope John Paul II's works and teachings to those with an in-depth understanding of the same. Philosophers and practically minded folks alike enjoyed the book. The content was both accessible and insightful, and the questions made the discussion flow naturally. We had 12 weeks of great discussion and now find ourselves struggling to follow with an equally excellent work.

The group discussions normally had 5-6 people showing up, we were regularly at 15-16 people for this study.

This is a refreshingly sensible book that speaks to the truth of what we all have to struggle with in terms of what it means to love each other in the biblical sense of love's definition. Many of us have grown up with a distorted view of romantic love and we are constantly inundated with false ideas in the popular culture about how to relate to members of the opposite sex. It is easy to confuse the initial attractions we experience as evidence that we are "meant for each other". In reality, the truth about selfless abiding love goes much deeper than a superficial feeling of infatuation. Much heartache could be avoided by paying close attention to the wonderful counsel in this book. The following excerpt is an example of the wisdom of being aware of our motivations in our relationships:

"... sensual and emotional responses can be so powerful that they dominate how we view the other person. In our fallen human nature, we can tend to see persons of the opposite sex primarily through the prism of their sexual values--the values that give us pleasure. As a result, we obscure our perception of them as persons, and view them more as opportunities for our own enjoyment"

I highly recommend this book to readers desiring to honor God and to learn how to better "love one another" in the way He would have us to love.
