This book was recommended to me after I told a friend of my plans to visit Prague. I would not have appreciated it as much had I not visited the city, investigated the Jewish Ghetto and gone to Terezin. Weil is a brilliant author. The story is intense and at times painful. If you have visit Prague and are interested in the history of the Nazi regime and the Jewish people, this is a must read.

I first was attracted to this book by a review of it by Philip Roth in "The Guardian" whilst I was recently in the U.K. I had never heard of the author, but was fascinated by Roth's description of him as 'a star of Czech literature". I have a deep interest in The Third Reich and Germany's subjugation of its many neighbouring countries and its impact on ordinary civilian's lives and the whole Jewish Question.

Weil's skill in transporting the reader deeply inside the many non-fictional and fictional characters stems from his having at first hand, experienced the horror of this period. There is humour interspersed with absolute dread as one sees the citizenry experience life at the whim of these brutal fanatics.

This is a must read book for anyone interested in this tragic part of the World's history.
