Arrived in two separate boxes a day early (thumbs up). Each box weighted about 70 pounds, each box was in pristine condition no external damage from shipping. As I moved the boxes to their assembly location nothing inside jostled around. When I opened the boxes I found the parts tightly packed with each part individually wrapped in plastic sleeves. Upon inventorying the boxes I found all the parts accounted for according to the assembly instructions.
Ease of Assembly “5-STARS”
I assembled the unit alone in just under 2 hours with a couple of breaks. All the nuts and bolts have 17-millimeter heads, there are 4 different lengths of bolts. Having two 17-millimeter socket wrenches will make assembly a lot easier, but using a box wrench and adjustable wrench combo will work fine. When you inventory the boxes use a pencil to mark the parts with their inventory number and mark the bags of nuts and bolts with a marker. A nice touch was that each nut, bolt and washer combo was already assembled in the bag, just the grab bolt, no need to fumble around for the nuts and washers. The assembly instructions consist of 4 pages each page has a diagram of how the parts go together and bolts to use. You start at the base and work your way up with the remaining 3 pages, the last part is the cable routing, having marked the parts and bags with the inventory number made it a breeze. As you assemble the unit don’t overtighten the bolts and nuts until you are done, you need a little play to connect some of the parts.
I purchased the unit to be able to use a barbell without a spotter. The pullup bar, Lat pulldown and low pull attachments are added bonuses. 3 workouts completed using every piece of the unit and its ROCK SOLID. I banged around a 190-pound barbell, did pullups, Lat pulldowns, low pull rows, bi and tri curls and used the dip attachment. I never felt unsafe or thought the unit was failing and any way. The only small criticism is the Lat and low pully system is only about 85% of the smoothness you would find in a gym system, but I plan to add some Lithium grease to the pully rail and that should improve the smoothness.
Packaging: The cage arrived in 2 separate boxes, every post came in a plastic sleeve to prevent scratches. Hardware comes in bags, but they make it super simple by putting washers and nuts on to the bolts. The cage uses only one bolt size, the pulley system uses the rest of the hardware. super simple, and mever had to wonder if I was using the wrong bolts.
Assembly: I built this rack in a little over 2 hours while not in any particular rush. At minimum you will need 2 adjustable wrenches to build this, a rachet and socket set will speed the job up alot, however I would not recommend using power tools, hand tools only. You could very easily over tighten with a drill motor and bend the steel. A stepping stool will be useful as well.
Instructions were very clear and straight forward, laid out in a step by step manner. You don't have to guess what nuts and bolts to use as they are labeled on the hardware card they come attached to. The instructions for the pulley and cable routing are labeled with numbers indicating the order the pulleys need to be fed and installed. I assembled all of it by myself with no problems or confusion (well... except I built it without my exercise mat laid out on the floor first. Oops.)
Quality: For what it is, and the price the quality is excellent. The welds are good, the steel is strong. There were some scrapes in the paint of the bottom posts, like they were sitting next to each other and something got scraped across both at the same time. Definitely happened at the manufacturer, not because of shipping, but whatever, I'll be beating the paint up myself, so I don't see it as a big issue
Usability: First I want to talk about the things I don't like.
-The knurling on the pull-up bar is a bit aggressive, and I might end up sanding it down a little.
-The cable system out of the box is a little rough, but becomes a lot smoother if you apply a bit of grease to the sled and pulleys.
-The bar supports are angled down slightly, and the barbell rolls after racking. They seem safe enough, but I'll be investing in a pair of J hooks.
And that's really it. Those are the only criticisms I have at this point. Really this rack is awesome. I put it in the spare bedroom in my apartment and have been using it just about everyday since instead of going to the gym. The lat pull down and low rows are awesome accessories to have. The weight holders keep my bedroom gym tidy and compact. The amount of accessories that work with this rack are amazing, I bout a Valor Fitness BD-CC2.0 Cable Crossover attachment to go with this, as well as dip handles. I also got a multi grip pull up bar, but I would have needed to drill some holes to install it, and it was a little too high for my ceiling, so I will be sending that back.
Last Words: This is an excellent buy for any home gym. I'm sure I will get years of use out of this cage.
edit: Spelling errors and had previously stated hardware was on a card. Its not, its in bags. I got it mixed up with my weight bench, oops!
A mistake I made was with the two rear posts. When I installed them, I had them backwards. The picture wasn't clear to me, but it wasn't a big deal to fix.
I had to move the unit by myself to place it in my garage. It isnt too heavy for me, but a two man lift would be reccomend. Dont drag the unit across the floor.
All in all, you'll only need a socket wrench with a 17mm socket and an adjustable wrench to build this unit.
The steel is not as thick as a squat rack you'd have in your local gym, but it is perfect for a home gym. Will it handle 1000lb benches all day long? Probably not. But I would be perfectly comfortable slamming down 300-400 pounds on it on regular basis. One recommendation I would give is, don't crank the sh*t out of the bolts when you're tightening them. No impact guns, just a wrench. I made that mistake on the first one and the steel can warp a little.
All in all, it is the best bang for your buck. Half the price of anything close to it in local fitness stores.
