Mercs 2 had hugely upgraded graphics over Mercs 1 and more guns and vehicles and vehicle types than the previous game. The world is a little more GTA-like and alive than the first game and it has a bit more to do. It's not a very densely detailed game but the world is appropriately large and fun to get around in. The world design is better with less frustrating corridors and much more open movement opportunities. No planes but helicopters are easier to get a hold of, as well as boats, motorbikes, etc. The controls are pretty standard third person shooter fare and the gunplay is fine, though nothing special. The story isn't super good but it has the right light-hearted-but-serious tone for the gameplay and characters. Overall this game is a fun open-world action romp with just enough content and originality to make it worth replaying later on.
Despite being much more modern and better looking than Mercenaries 1, this game was relatively weak visually for its generation. Mostly due to the very simple lighting/shadows and distance fog. Some of the gameplay elements were also a downgrade. Weapons support was nerfed heavily. No more laser designators to mark targets from a distance, just throw smoke grenades for everything. This makes the support much more frustrating to use, and really knocks the wind out of the gameplay. To knock a building down you used to be able to mark it from long range and watch the fireworks. Now you can't watch the carnage from a distance, and you are often focused on getting out of the blast area so it's hard to notice the awesome destruction going on around you. This takes away one of the more iconic and cinematic elements of the first game.
Overall this game had slightly cheap build quality all around, but it had heart and some thought put into most of its elements. If you can get it cheap, the 360 version of this is the best way to go. PC has some issues with controls in both mouse aim and with a gamepad. The 360 copy is not Xbox One compatible however, and never will be. I chose the PS3 version for this reason. I want to sell my 360, as all of my current games are Xbox One compatible. I can get PS3 versions for the games that aren't and eliminate a space-using console from my collection very nicely.
The game itself is your basic sandbox style game with faction missions called contracts that you must complete. You get to play as one of three characters that have a certain perk like carry more ammo, regain health faster or run faster. I am playing as Chris right now but will probably play as all three characters for fun.
The graphics are decent for a 2008 game and the map is of decent size, not super huge but more than enough. The story is a simple "get revenge" and sets you up well enough to get going into the game.
The gameplay is where the game shines. Though the game is very unrealistic, that is what makes it fun. You can shoot, blow stuff up, call in air strikes, ride in bikes/cars/choppers, side with a certain faction, bribe factions to get on their good side, mess around just for fun, compete in challenges that are given by your team members like racing, sniping, shooting etc.
The missions are also quite fun, like protecting important people, taking over outposts of other factions, blowing up buildings to rubble and more. The side bounties where my favorites, finding or killing high value targets was my favorite thing to do in this game.
Although every aspect of the game works essentially, they do lack polish. For example, throughout the game you find cash, weapons, and other equipment that requires your chopper guy to come pick up, so you call in the chopper and sometimes it just doesn't pick up the item and then disappears into thin air. You have call him in again and that usually works but is a little annoying. Also misha your jet pilot who you call in for air attacks will sometimes miss the targets and that can cause to die and fail the mission, still these small problems don't take away from the overall experience.
If you just want to have all out fun you can use cheat codes that will give you unlimited health and ammo and go out on a total destruction run. With the cheats the game was ridiculously fun since I was blowing up everyone and thing with C4. It still gives me laughs to plant C4 on a enemy tank and blow it to bits.
Overall, this is not a serious game, the glitches and unrealistic nature of the game is what made it fun for me. The AI can be really dumb at times, and you will hear the same dialogue from npc's and your character over and over again. Still, I would recommend this game just to have a good time blowing up the world in flames.
