Mostly positive. I would absolutely recommend this kit to anyone seeking great knives. The only downside is also a good thing.

Pros:
Lightweight
VERY sharp right out of the box
good selection, useful knives
high quality knife roll
large round handle, fills my hand (for my taste, this is perfect). knives with slimmer handles tend to want to rotate or move when cutting through something tough. These have a nice round handle that fills my hand and offers superior grip.

Con:
lightweight.... it's nice over time to have light knives, reducing fatigue and whatnot, but a heavier knife would have a more "solid" feel to it. I do not foresee having a problem with these, as the blades are full thickness and don't flex much, but light knives usually have a "cheap" feel. They managed to make these light and still feel durable.

Extremely sharp right out of the box, don't expect to have to sharpen.

Overall, great kit for use in a working kitchen. fairly inexpensive, solid knives but not flashy. these will be my everyday for a long time.

If you are searching for fully forged, qualities knives on a budget, I highly recommend the Mercer Genesis series. I am a bit of a foodie and have used ceramic blades, Wustofs and Henkels in the past. On a functional level, these knives pair right next to those. Used in culinary schools, the blades are of top quality and the knives are well balanced in the hand. Some who I have shown my knives to have objected to the synthetic "soft" handle, but I think they were mostly just mad at the price I paid when they compared these to their much more costly German ones. Are they as pretty as a set of Global knives? No. But they are sharp, durable and won't break the bank. If you are looking for a show set, you might want to look elsewhere, but if you have some cutting to do, these knives should please.

I purchased this knife set at the end of August last year. It was my first time purchasing a quality set and it didn't disappoint. They are comfortable, sharp and very sturdy. I use the chef's knife frequently and recently noticed some weird staining on one side of the blade, no amount of cleaning or polishing was able to remove it. I contacted Mercer, was told to email sales with a picture and description and received a response within an hour. They asked for a few more pictures and my address, about 30 minutes after I emailed those I was told I would be receiving a replacement while they look into possible cause of the staining. I am thrilled at the quality of the product and would definitely recommend them to a friend, but also wanted to acknowledge the top notch customer service.

Bought the set a little while back, had my doubts about mercer for a long time but wow... After handling a co worker's genesis set I decided to pick up a set for prep work, I hate standard wood handles even if the rivets are flush. Most stereotypes are that if the handle is rubber or you can't see the rivets, its a cheap knife. But alas the millenia set has really made me impressed with mercer. Coming from someone who owns shun premier knifes, I can say for the price of the set it is a steal for any cook or chef who wants a quality durable and extremely sharp knife (if taken care of.)

I ordered these to replace a long-serving set of lesser (but still decent) knives as what will hopefully be my last cutlery purchase ever. I had a few criteria in mind when making my decision:

1: Good quality steel without breaking the bank - these knives aren't VG10, but they're comparable to a number of much pricier options in terms of materials. They take a great edge and stay sharp. Just remember to give them a couple of licks with a honing steel before using them and to hand-wash them after use and they'll be razor-sharp every time you need to use them.

2: Non-porous non-rubber handles - wood handles look great, but require extra care to keep them looking their best and I've never liked the way rubberized handles feel in the hand.

3: Just enough knives - this set contained exactly what I was looking for in terms of cutlery - I've owned the big 10+ piece sets, and every time, I ended up using a handful of them while the rest languished unused in the block. A medium-length standard chef's knife is the workhorse of the set, while the long bread knife, paring knife and boning knife definitely have their uses. The only semi-extraneous item in the set is the 5" utility knife, but even that gets pulled out on occasion.

4: Bolster/blade design - a bolster that doesn't extend all the way to the edge sealed the deal for me - the smooth transition between the bolster and blade makes the traditional 'pinch' grip much more comfortable.

An aside - the Wusthof Studio block (search 'B00A6L24IY' on Amazon) is a perfect small-footprint storage/display solution for this set.

great knife set for the money... I bought this set about 4 months ago to use at my job as a cook at a upscale restaurant. they haven't let me down so far. the blades hold their edge longer then I expected. with constant chopping and slicing I find I only need to re hone them every other day or so, and I haven't had to take a whetstone to them yet. way better then the set I was using I would recommend this set to anyone looking for a good quality yet affordable knife set.
