By 1991, the world’s most celebrated trumpeter could look back on five decades of musical evolution – his own, and that of the world around him. Miles Davis had found ways of marrying jazz with classical ideas, then later R&B, rock and funk, producing hybrid offspring that shaped the course of popular music and had come to define his legend. In 1985, he’d left Columbia after thirty years to sign to Warner Bros. Records, a label riding high with best-selling artists like Madonna, Van Halen and Prince, with whom he had a mutual admiration and friendship. -Miles Davis’s lifelong love for France is well-documented, and in July 1991, he became a Knight of their Legion of Honour. Davis received the award from French culture minister Jack Lang, who described him as: "The Picasso of jazz." A few days before, he played this electrifying set at the Vienne Jazz Festival with the Miles Davis Group. He passed away two months later in September 1991. -Miles Davis’ performance at Jazz a Vienne on July 1, 1991 became one of his final live performances before he passed away on September 28, 1991, and this previously unreleased set includes two songs written by Prince, “Penetration” and “Jailbait”.

Listen to “Human Nature.” The song here stands on a different plane from his repeatedly performed show tunes. A sound inquirer Miles speaks in all sincerity. His solo is soaring over an untrodden region. Never say we’ve heard enough of “Time After Time.” From the opening, Miles releases his note toward our unexpected direction. We realize Miles is still changing the music, and creating in the moment. Prince’s two tune are thrilling. On July 1, ’91, Miles appeared on a stone amphitheater in Vienne. It was the third night performance of his last European Tour. The tour lasted nearly one month, from Hamburg on June 28 to Vienna, Austria, on July 27. Two special projects were planned during this tour, the concert dedicating to Gil Evans at the Montreux on July 8 and the Miles band alumni session in Paris on July 10. Miles could never imagine that he had less than three months to live at this date. “Live At Vienne 1991” is recorded by Zycopolis Production, a Lyon based independent production company, partnered with the festival in filming and broadcasting. They are said to forget about the high fidelity audio after archiving them for 30 years. Ashley Kahn’s liner note is very substantial and is well worth reading. “Live At Vienne 1991” is recommendable to understand Miles, who keeps moving forward even in the last period of his life.

Over the years, he evolved, changed, surprised and for those who think that everything went to hell in a handbasket in his final years, you are wrong. This was a superb show and I wish I was there.
