As I have stated in my review for Scandalous, book #1 in the Alpha Bodyguard series, I am absolutely in love with how Bartel writes her heroes. They are super alpha, need-to-be-in-control ex-military men that know how to get a job done-- in and out of the bedroom! One thing I love about these alphas is once they have a woman in their target, they don't get scared away easily. The female characters tend to come with major issues but these men are prepared to slay all of their dragons and then some!
Collins was definitely an interesting character in that he is alpha but he does have a sensitive side to him. Even though he didn't know the details of Brook's past, he instinctively knew she was the one for him and was willing to conquer all of her problems once he got out of the service for good-- if only she would trust him. I honestly didn't blame her for having trust issues, especially once her past is revealed. And let me tell you-- I actually enjoy insta-love stories, but I get why she felt she couldn't just trust Collins right away. She wanted to, but Collins was only in her life a very, very short period of time before he had to finish his tour and just expected her to wait for him. I felt for him AND for her. Perhaps if they had both had more time to build something before he had to leave...but that is what makes the angst in this story and the turn of events so much better.
Usually the insanely hot sex scenes are my favorite in Bartel books-- I know that sounds so sleazy but the woman just knows how to write dirty talking alphas in the bedroom. What surprised me about this book is my favorite scene was actually the action part where Collins and the heroes from previous books (and some soon to come) set up an operation to extract Brook. That part was written so well, I felt the tension, my heart rate kicked up and I seriously thought at one point that I could see it as a movie or tv show.
I would be remiss if I didn't add that the secondary characters truly flesh out Bartel's stories. Most of them have been in previous books but even if she is a new author to you, you will fall in love with Talon (who cracks me the hell up with his endless nicknames), Dane, Luna, Neil, etc. Their sense of brotherhood is beautiful to read about because even when one of them is hurting, may be off their game or losing their mind over a woman, they don't hesitate to jump into the fire to help each other out. It's one hell of a bromance!
Merciless was just an amazing book. I felt that Bartel dug a little deeper into the emotions with Collins which was refreshing. While Tyler's story is up next in Reckless, I am dying for Sawyer's book in Ruthless. I love a strong, silent type and so far Sawyer has been hitting ALL of my buttons!
Well done, Sybil! Oh, and my fellow readers, every book in her series (this one and previous) can be read as standalones! However, I encourage you all to buy Bartel's books and immerse yourselves in alpha goodness! happy reading!

Brookelynn & Garrett connect and it's practically spontaneous combustion. Wow! But she disappears. And takes his truck. And his heart. He knows she leaves with a man & the unanswered questions haunt him.
Fast forward 3 years and Garrett sees Brookelyn on a Miami street but she's not alone. The individual she's with makes Garrett chase her down & call in his favor from his boss, Andre Luna. But does Garrett want revenge? Does he want to rescue Brookelyn? Will she even let him? Things with Brookelyn are not what they appear to be. Will that make a difference?
Merciless thunders towards a rousing last 1/4 featuring lots of action that include Dane, Neil, Talon, & Sawyer. Both Garrett & Brookelyn will have to forgive the other if they want true love.
I liked both Garrett & Brookelyn. Kudos to Ms. Bartel for telling this story linearly & not rely on flashbacks or storytelling gimmicks to cover the 3 year time spread.
I'm pretty sure I will have a major book hangover for a while. Get Merciless today!
