Lately I've been feeling like God isn't answering. (Or, rather, I'm not liking the answers.) I pray for wisdom, and discover more questions. I pray for forgiveness and discover more sin. I plead for healing and find more pain, more disease. More tests to be run, more waiting to be waited.
Cancer, chronic illness and pain. Loss. Questions without clear answers but with eternal consequences. .. I feel like every time I come up for air another wave crashes on my head. (Heart?) Frustrated. Overwhelmed.
Still, I pray. lately? Without bothering to tell God what I need or want him to do . Sometimes, words are barely involved. Sometimes. Breathing itself, has been a prayer
, . As I read The Mercy Prayer what resonated most wasn't the words....it was their truth. Truth that changed perspective. God hasn't been ignoring or denying my requests. He's been answering them with mercy.
Mercy to bear pain. Mercy to stand up under temptation to run. Mercy in kindness. Mercy in meals made with love to sustain us through recoveries. Mercy in provision. Mercy in lack. Mercy to find joy in tragedy. Mercy to sit with unanswered questions and not lose my mind. (Mostly.)
A million mercies line the mess of my nest.
With reading these words, my hope is renewed. My focus is changed. I will endeavor to quit telling God what he should do....and ask him to do what he always does. Lord, have mercy.
"His grace is sufficient" and it begins with mercy.
Read this book. Let it speak to your heart. Let our hearts beat to the rhythm of the mercy prayer.....I have a feeling that if we do..... they will be beating in time with the very heart of God. What a different world that would be.
Again: Lord, have mercy
Gelinas begins his book recounting an ongoing dialogue with his grandmother who couldn't comprehend how a criminal could end up beside her in paradise. "You mean to tell me that a mafia hit man has just as good a chance to go to heaven as I do?" she asked. Gelinas goes on to explain that mercy is the answer to that question. "Either God doesn't exist or God is merciful," states Gelinas. "Otherwise how do I explain all the wrong I have done that has seemingly gone unnoticed?"
God is not the angry, wrathful god that some claim, but one who has doled out mercy from the beginning. "Lord, have mercy!" is the most prayed prayer in the Bible, both Old and New Testaments, and never once did the prayer go unanswered. Mercy is the core of who God is. Gelinas brings example after example of God's mercy.
"Mercy is the opposite of justice," Gelinas writes. "Justice is what we deserve in any given situation. Mercy, on the other hand, is not receiving what we deserve, or receiving less than what we have coming to us." Being on the receiving end of Christ's mercy creates merciful people in this world. Instead of demanding justice, see what happens when you give mercy to someone who has hurt or wronged you. You will not only change their life, but you'll feel a palpable transformation in your own life. This is Robert's message.
Gelinas is humble, always including himself when he speaks of sinners. He shares just enough of his personal life to let you, the reader, know his heart. The Mercy Prayer is not a heavy read. It is uplifting and full of evidence that what he writes is relevant and true. It is a book of hope, even urging us to practice making mercy an automatic response in our lives.
It is no longer a priority in my life to see justice served. Justice often leaves the heart hard and empty. Mercy is always healing, both to the giver and receiver. The Mercy Prayer is so rich with examples, explanations and the hope of mercy that it has quickly escalated to one of my favorite go-to books.
Even if you're not a Christian, or don't believe in God, I think everyone can benefit from the 'core message' found within these pages. Why not step out of the box and just read this book. If you're not a better person after reading it, give it to someone else. Actually, I think that even if YOU ARE BETTER OFF AFTER READING IT, YOU SHOULD 'GIFT' IT TO SOMEONE - ANYONE ELSE! They will thrilled once they have read it, and you will feel great for introducing them to a whole new way to think about how we live our lives. What moves us forward? What holds us back? The answers to these & so many other questions that we probably never would have thought to ask in the first place, are RIGHT HERE for the taking! If you don't like it, send it to ME!
LOVE, love, love this BOOK! Best read in a very long time! Don't miss out on how you can truly become the person you were created to be. Clock's ticking.....what will you do? Just my opinion, but if I were YOU, I'd read this little book! IT ROCKS!
