Joey W. Hill proves herself to be a master storyteller in 'A Mermaid's Kiss'. Her lyrical prose is nothing short of magical in it's ability to be both superbly dark and richly erotic while retaining it's fairy tale essence. As a long time fan of the Disney version of 'The Little Mermaid', I've also been aware that the true tale foretells a much more tragic ending whereby the mermaid doesn't marry her prince but instead perishes cursed and broken-hearted. Ms. Hill expands upon this darker original with tragedy destined to fall upon all descendants of Arianne.

Jonah, Angel and Prime Legion Commander of the Goddess, has lived a long life drenched in destruction, death, and blood. Having survived a war-torn millennia, Jonah's soul has slowly tarnished with the very darkness he's been fighting and thereby corrupting his faith and love in the Lady. After being mortally wounded in battle, Jonah plunges into the ocean with a sigh of relief; grateful that he can finally find some peace in death. His hopes are thwarted though by a brave and beautiful little mermaid.

Anna, a Daughter of Arianne and therefore doomed to tragedy, is still a woman of hope and love. Cursed with the ability to shapeshift into a human, she's lived the life as a being with no true place in the world, an outcast, but one capable of compassionate love and fierce loyalty. Unlike the female ancestors before her, Anna accepts her fate in life to live without reciprocal love while at the same time yearning for it above all else. Given her self-sacrificing nature, it is no surprise that she risks her life from the very beginning for an angel bent on his own destruction.

Despite having lived for a 1000 years, Jonah has never truly sought to understand his own soul.

Okay my rating of two stars frankly was me being extremely nice. I don't think it was as horrible as to deserve a one, but holy moly. I have been fighting reading this book since I purchased it. In my mind I tried to reason with myself that this book was clearly erotica, but that doesn't give the excuse of the story and reading feeling being so horrible. I was bored. If I didn't have this rule of once you start a book you have to finish, I would have dropped it within the first chapter. I found myself actually skimming. I'm not against the paper porn! Some like it. Do you. Be you. Own it. That's great, but I did not find this book to be worthy to print. It's my opinion. I couldn't even grab a meaningful quote from it. Maybe I'm just let down, because I have this weird love for mermaids and I was looking for a decent novel that pertained to them, and I got this. Like I've mentioned before in other reviews, I like to live in the book's world. I want to attach with the characters. I want to be so emotionally involved in the book that I need time to start another. I'm disappointed that this didn't do it for me, and it's not because it was erotica. I loved 50 shades of Grey. I loved the characters in 50 shades. I'm disappointed because I took a chance of a love story about mermaids and it left a bad taste in my mouth. I will say it was quite comical the terms of endearment (Little One) and (My Lord) gave me a laugh. Yet made me want to throw up at the same time. I mean really? You're going to do those things to your lover and have her pet name Little One. Yuck. And with that I'm out. lol

I don't regret getting this book but it was a little slow for me. At times it would pick up then it dragged at other parts. The author would pull me in then they would lose me. I didn't like that.It was to the point that I was skeptical about going on with the series. At times I felt like giving up on the book cause it was dragging too much. I got annoyed with Anna for some reason but I also admired her courage. She seem liked a schoolgirl with a crush on a guy or a friend that doesn't really notice her the way she wants him too but she still keeps being persistent which eventually later on it was for the best. I wanted more to happen between them. More passion. Yes they had sex which was written fine but I didn't feel the connection between the two. Anna loved him for sure but Jonah the angel was somewhat distant with her throughout the book until towards the end which is understandable cause he was going through other things trying to find out his purpose but I think they could have been more passion or a connection and a little more action. There was something lacking with those two but it turned out to be a sweet book. It wasn't bad but it definitely wasn't great. It took me a little while to get through but I managed to. I was actually more interested with Mina and David. But I believe their story is in another book. I found Mina more interesting and mysterious even though she was aggressive. At one point I told myself I'm not going to read no more from this author or go on with the series but at the end it left me curious so I think I might be getting the next book and see from there. I just hope the next book has a little more action, intensity, and passion. If I do go through the whole series and if it turns out the same way, then most likely I won't read anything else from this author. If you get discourage reading my review, don't be. I say give it a shot.
