Jeff A. Menges (b.1965) was born in a small, seaside town in New Jersey. His teen years were shaped by Star Wars, sword and sorcery novels, and Heavy Metal Magazine—his fate was already sealed at this point.

A long-time contributor to the gaming industry, his illustration work continues to grace role-playing products, card games, books and magazines as well. Recent projects include compiling and editing books on legendary illustrators; Arthur Rackham, Edmund Dulac, Howard Pyle, and others. Jeff has now produced more than 20 books on Golden Age illustration and painters of the late nineteenth century.

In addition to his freelance work, Jeff has steady experience as an Art Director and Designer, and works with Dover Publications in New York. He currently lives on Long Island with his wife and two children.

Although the book is very good (it has a wide variety of styles, images, and artists), I was most impressed with the images produced off the CD-ROM. The print quality was excellent (for example, on one of the Waterhouse oils, you can even see the slight cracking of the surface in the painting itself).

Great source for graphic design and craft hobbyists. I am enjoying playing with the immages on my computer.

I have to admit, I haven't used this book yet. However, I love all the Dover clip art and art history books. I design quilts and embroideries, and am getting into collage. But I also enjoy just looking at the pictures!

This collection would make a nice companion to Dover's Pirates CD-ROM and Book (Dover Electronic Clip Art) or to any of the publisher's collections of fantasy art. From a beautiful full-color reproduction of a Herbert Draper oil of what I presume to be Icarus after his fall being mourned by the daughters of Triton, to silhouette spot illustrations and old woodcuts bordering on the grotesque, but dominated by oils, watercolors, and fantastically detailed pen-and-ink linework, here are illustrations of mermaids and naiads, tritons and sea-gods, and even a frog in a tailcoat mounted on a seahorse, some interacting with landbound mortals, others restricting themselves to their own kind. Some are humorous, some verge on the erotic, and most are just lovely examples of imaginative art, but all should please people who enjoy fantasy and folklore made visual. I would have liked to have seen the artists' names under each of at least the larger pictures, instead of only in the index (where they're not always easy to match to their works), but that doesn't spoil my ability to appreciate the images themselves.
