PS The green ones attract a lot of attention!
The shoe size overall fit fine. I like my shoes where I can wiggle my toes freely - they get a bit claustrophobic. For these, though, I feel as though there is a bit too much room, and this may be due to the fact that the instep part of the shoe is pretty snug. Not too tight, just snug and it makes the ball of the foot / toe part feel as though there is nothing there. (Freedom is nice, drastic chance is a bit weird).
Other than that, no complaints. I have high arches. A lot of comments I've seen have comments about being good for flat feet... but guess it works both ways! Light weight. If you're switching from a "normal" shoe to one of these light weight, please be sure you adjust to them slowly!! it is a huge difference!
These shoes may not work if you over pronate or supinate, but I find my gait improved. I am a person that walks much better barefoot than in shoes, these shoes are the next best thing to being barefoot. Many people have stated that the shoes run 1/2 size small, I bought size 10, Usually wear 9 1/2 to 10. My daughters friend usually wears 10 1/2 to 11 and tried on the shoes and said she thought she could wear that size. I guess it depends on how you like it to fit. It does have a lot of give across the foot. My daughter has a pair as well and loves them!
When I got into running, I found I wasn't enjoying it due in large part to my heavy clonker New Balance shoes I'd had since freshman year of college. I was also suffering from horrendous shin and heel pain, all of which disappeared when I tried a quick run in my VFF's I had kicking around (also from freshman year of college). Being that I was now two years past my college days, I figured it was time to purchase a new pair of shoes. After reading Born to Run, I decided to purchase a pair of 'transitional' type shoes, with a minimal drop and as little padding as I could stand.
These shoes fit the bill, and have been absolutely perfect for me. They're super lightweight, to the point that I sometimes think my VFF's weigh more than these bad boys. While they seem loose in the heel, they do not chafe or rub. The wide toebox gives me plenty of room to splay my toes, and there's enough padding all around to keep me injury free.
Since beginning running in these shoes I've been trying to cultivate a mid-forefoot running style, something I don't think would have been possible with my old shoes, or most other shoes on the market. I'm confident that I will be able to run these Merrell's into the ground, as after 70 miles they look as good as new.
Sock wise I'm currently in love and saving up for a collection of Swiftwick Aspire One's. The Zero's are too short, and I did experience some cutting into the back of my ankle when wearing zero show type socks. The One's come up high enough, and are minimal enough to allow me to have complete control over my foot and the feeling of the ground beneath.
I plan to update these as I continue to use them.
