They're breathable, rather than waterproof, which suits my hiking style of staying on the trail, and walking through puddles rather than widening the trail like an idiot. Feet get wet on the trail, it's just part of hiking. Just make sure to dry your feet well, at night. The boots will mostly dry out by the next morning as well. Basically, still comfortable when wet.
Comfortable and breathable in the heat as well. I tried a synthetic lightweight sock, and it felt like the sweat just pooled in these. Switched back to a wool sock and the problem was solved.
Traction is good, other than on steep wet rock, or of course, ice. Haven't noticed significant change in traction at 500 miles. I only wear these on the trail, to save the sole from abrasive roads and sidewalks.
The stitching and construction is bulletproof. Not a single loose thread or separating part. I was initially concerned that the laces would saw through the fabric eyelets, but years later, there's just the hint of wear.
When I first put the shoes on, I was worried that the heel might have even too much loft, but they quickly formed to my feet, and have held up fairly well. In fact, the reason I'm here today is to buy some new sole inserts, because while the originals are still holding together, they seem a bit flat.
Good heel support, and good lateral support at the toe box. I've tried other shoes where it felt the front of my foot was spilling over the sides. I'd imagine this will vary based on your foot shape.
Edit: They made it from Springer to Damascus, about 470 additional miles on the AT in 2016. A week short of Damascus, I tore the sole in half when I caught the edge on a sharp rock, the glued repair lasted until town. Overall, 900 quality miles.
After another few weeks the sole of the shoe is detached. Soon it'll be completely off. Highly recommended not to buy from this dealer through Amazon. I notice because I'm past the 30 day period I can't return it for a replacement or to get repaired.
I believe I will even be able to use them for hot summer hikes, as the added vents should keep them cool. I matched them to Wool/Synthetic blend socks and had no issues wearing them for one week on river (8-10 hrs per day wet). I did shift to dry shoes in the evening. I had no binding or pinching and this was only after being able to break them in for about 8 hours the 2 weeks prior.
Would strongly recommend. A bit more than the jungle boot model, but well worth it.
TRACTION: These boots give noticeable, excellent traction on all surfaces I have walked on. The traction was not as a good on packed sand with thin gravel on it. However, I do not believe any shoe can help with this. They are slightly slippery on wet rock, but once again, not sure if any shoes would help with this. Just by looking at the tread on the bottom of the shoe, I can tell a lot of design decisions went into their depth, direction, and shape. These lend themselves well to the traction aspect.
ANKLE SUPPORT: Ankle support is average. I do not feel the pressure on my ankle of good support, however, I did not have any problems with it. Good traction paired with good foot placement protect the ankles such that great ankle support is not super necessary.
BLISTERS: I experienced very few blisters or hotspots. The shoes are true to size and I had no problems in the toe box on descents. There are definitely spots that build up heat, but these caused discomfort, not blisters.
DURABILITY: My only complaint with this shoe and which causes it to lose one star is durability. The material which comes up on the outside of the right foot on the toe box is separating from the soft mesh on the top of the shoe. After 40 miles, I feel that this is unacceptable. A hiking boot's purpose is to allow for safe, comfortable ascents and descents on uneven, various terrains. I do not feel like I have used this boot in a way it was not intended to be used. I expect up to 4-5 seasons from hiking boots, and falling apart at 40 miles means that it is not on track for this.
I purchased these boots in May and have worn them less than 4 times. Today as pulled the laces firmly to tighten them up, the upper eyelet look broke away from the boot. As my return window has closed, I have no recourse to get the boots returned/repaired.
