Despite having the reputation of a quality brand, Merrell only offers a 60-day warranty on shoes. I all but guarantee you that these shoes will fail soon after that 60-day period is up, especially if you have active kids like me. 60-day is nothing for shoes at this price point. I'm unhappy and will be looking at other brands in the future.
My daughter is picky and hard on shoes. I have been buying her Walmart sneakers and replacing them every month !!! She absolutely loves these. These are durable and comfortable shoes. Merrell makes a great shoe and these did not disappoint.
I'm uploading photos of our 2nd pair, replaced one year and 12 days after purchase and worn almost every day during the school year (excluding rain boot days and sandal weather days.)
Merrell quality control must be spotty, or my son is surprisingly easy on shoes compared to other kids. We send him to a school that prioritizes play outside every day (in New England), so his shoes definitely get a healthy share of wet weather, mud, and running around on grass, gravel, and brick pavers plus concrete and asphalt around our home.
I can say that my kids have both sometimes worn out the velcro fastening strap on *other* pairs of shoes from other brands. I don't think we are being particularly careful or delicate with the Trail Chaser shoes. :) Ours have held up as I would expect from sturdy hiking sneakers.
I bought the first pair of Merrell Trail Chaser shoes in person at a Nordstrom store after having my son's feet measured. As he outgrew them (yet refused to wear any others), I found them on Amazon and purchased his second pair in January 2019. In January 2020, I bought his third, and current, pair.
The Amazon listing has changed a little bit from:
Merrell Trail Chaser Hiking Shoe (Little Kid/Big Kid), Gunsmoke/Orange, 2.5 M US Little Kid
Merrell Kids' Unisex M-Trail Chaser Sneaker, Gunsmoke/Orange, 4.5 M US Big Kid
Aside from what is probably just a product listing change, we've had the same color combo of army green (Gunsmoke) and Orange for all three pairs, and neither my son nor I can find any visible difference between the old and new pairs.
From the photos of less satisfied consumers, it does appear that more of them show alternate color combos. Perhaps the Gunsmoke/Orange combo is a better bet for anyone reading this with quality concerns?
My child's passionate love of these shoes is the best review I can provide. It's not easy for me to get him to wear any other casual shoe. He likes the speed of velcro over old-fashioned tie laces. He likes that they are weather resistant so he can wear them on rainy days.
My son says his feet stay dry (unless he steps in a puddle so deep that they fill up with water from the top.)
For other parents whose kids love these Merrell Trail Chaser shoes, I can recommend this particular style for boots that might fit the same child:
Merrell Chameleon 7 Access Mid Waterproof Boot Big Kid 5 Black
I bought the boots a half size larger to allow for thick winter socks. My son has been happy with the boots, too, but we've only had them a few weeks now.
From my perspective, if you like the looks of these shoes, it is worth trying them, but make sure you buy from a seller with a generous return period in case you get a pair like those displayed in the other reviews. I will keep buying these until my son has outgrown the largest size (or finally decides he likes something else!)
The velcro came off from the nice leather strap it was attached to, and now the shoe cannot be closed. It's annoying, because it is truly a "weak link" in the shoe that makes the whole shoe not work. I am going to try to fix it somehow but the leather is too tough to run through my sewing machine. Might have to get a heavy duty needle and a rock...
But for the price and this happening within three months, eh, not so great. Disappointed in that because the rest of the shoe is very good.

We always purchase all of our kids footwear with the intent of lasting 2 seasons, these were no different. With this in mind, these lasting 2 years for our boy they have performed extremely well. The old adage ' you get what you pay for ' and the higher quality typically in name brand items is quite true here. These are not cheap department store shoes that cost $14 but the quality that we do get from Merrell footwear is impressive and in our years with Merrell that quality is come to be expected and relied upon. Checking the Amazon invoice for this we paid just $48 at that point in time so with that cost and 2 years of rough and tumble wear we have zero to complain about.
The padding inside the shoe gave nice comfort we've been told by our boy, nothing pinching or rubbing against the toes or heals. The sole has not cracked open even under all the stress they were given. The elastic type laces have stayed strong, the fabric has not ripped open. The heals and toes have not separated either. While there has been wear on the soles as shown in the pictures, if you would know all the travels these have gone through...these soles has held up extremely well.
On the front of the toes some of the material started to get torn up, I didn't understand why this all of a sudden started to happen until I saw our boy do toe stops on his skateboard ! No shoe can stand up to that type of dragging on cement so I began to teach him to just board pop! Without that kind of extreme wear the toe tips would still be almost new.
We can 100% recommend these Merrell Ml-B Trail Chaser Shoes to any parents who wants quality for their child !
Helpful, is how I hope you find my review
I bought my son this pair with amazon prime. We got them within 3 days. I was very pleased.
Then the first day he wore them, the elastic lace broke. He has had to wear them until we get the replacement pair....that was the beginning of January. Amazon Prime sent me an email today stating that they can not locate a pair for replacement.
So my file was closed.
That is THOROUGHLY DISAPPOINTING.
