I sized up a half size thanks to all of the suggestions and I'm really glad I did! They do run on the smaller side. I normally wear a size 7 in every type of shoe and the 7.5 is just about perfect. I used band aids on the back of my heels on my first walk because I was worried about getting blisters but didn't have any trouble. I also think that they have helped me to correct my form. I must have been running really weird before because on my first run I kept wanting to place my feet in sort of a pigeon-toed manner and these shoes force you to think about the position of your feet when you hit the ground because you can actually feel it. I haven't experienced any joint pain since I have used them for running. My old shoes caused my knees and ankles to ache badly and now all I experience is some muscle soreness from getting used to a completely different running experience.
I am a happy customer so far!
I am still completely happy with these shoes. I have been running 1-3 miles almost daily in them and walking in them every single day and they are still great. My leg muscles are much more toned now and I experience no joint pain at all. I have found that the more you wear them the better they sort of "mold" to your feet. They are no longer tight feeling, they fit perfectly. I am trying to get my fiance to buy some as well and I tell everyone how much I love them. Great brand! I upped my rating from a 4 to a 5 because these are worth it.
Just got back from day hiking the state of Maryland and 6 miles south of the Maryland/ W Va. boarder. A total of 49 miles in 5 days wearing a 10 lb. daypack, 60 years old / 25lbs. overweight in fair shape. hiked over and climbed several rock fields at the Penn end. miles ranged from 6.5 miles to 12.3 miles per day. On the first day I carried my hiking shoes because I was afraid of the unknown. After 4 miles everything was great. I decided to switch back to the old hiking shoes and with in 40 mins. there was the toe pain. The next 4 days the old shoes stayed in the car. These shoes allowed my feet to respond naturally to the ground, stepping on rocks, climbing and desending. The grip these shoes have is amazing. The first 2 days I did not wear socks and on the 2ed day there was a slight skin irratation on the top of 1 toe. The next 3 days I wore toe sock liners and everything was good and my feet were warmer.
I am fully aware that these shoes are not meant for backpacking with a heavy load but on my next hiking trip I will be carrying between 21 to 25 lbs. We'll see if I get the same response with the extra weight.
I still had tired and achy feet at the end of the day but that comes with the territory, nothing that a good night sleep didn't take care of. The next day I was up and ready to go again. My one complaint is I can't get them in white!
From past experience with different Merrell shoes their sizing can't be trusted, my feet measure 6.5 wide these shoes 7.5 were tight and I used a shoe horn for the first 2 weeks to get them on. After that they were fine. A different type of Merrell shoe that I purchased was a size 9!!!! that's why I am afraid to order any Merrell shoes online if I haven't already tried it on in a store.
I also smear a little tea tree oil down the middle of my foot to help with foot odor and when I was hiking I placed a thin odor eater in the shoe. didn't know it was there.
What I like: they are extremely breathable, they have that slim/barefoot technology that I love, they are easy on/easy off.
I would compare these to a pair of Sketchers I got in gray/black that had the same slim profile. The Merrells are more comfy and more "breathable". I prefer these for actually walking in. They're good for travel - forget Hollywood, you need to be wearing good shoes in case of emergency! I would be interested in trying other styles in their line. I just didn't want to spend alot of money until I had tried them out.
I made the mistake of going on a walk w/some jogging in these. Definitely not good for walking in! After a couple miles it was unbearable; I got blisters on the back of my heel where the elastic rubbed and ended up walking barefoot the rest of the way. I don't have this problem when I'm running in them though.
Other than that, I'd say these shoes run a little small on the sizing. My regular shoes are a size 5 1/2. I grabbed the 6 because I read reviews saying they run small. I'm wondering now if I shouldn't have grabbed a size 6 1/2.
