I'm still in the breaking in period, only walking 30-40 minutes or so, but have also walk/jogged in them and no blisters, no rubbing or discomfort of any kind. These shoes are developed differently than other shoes. Merrell Q-Form shoes take into consideration the Quadriceps' angle, which is the angle between the hip and the knee. Because women have wider hips and a lower center of gravity, the angle is more pronounced. The Q-Form takes that all into consideration and combines properly sequenced cushioning with a supportive and naturally aligning mid-sole.
I will start looking at their other shoes now - if this is the technology they use.
BUT ... since I do a lot of hiking on very steep trails, I need new tread for surer footing, so I'm getting a second pair. I'll keep my old pair as a backup or as an everyday shoe, where the tread isn't as important. I have a feeling they'll last a longer while yet.
I bought the most unpopular/cheapest color for the money $avings. In person, they are a nice light denim blue, for the ventilated parts, and the suede outer lattice is a soft charcoal gray. So way nicer than what is photographed as a drab blue and black. I bought these for hiking and they are fabulous right out of the box - as I expected, because my son has a pair. I have a fairly high instep on my one foot, and I usually have to fiddle around with a more elaborate lacing pattern to accommodate the height. But that was not necessary with these shoes. So plenty of side to side room from the instep forward. I wear a normal width in all shoes.
The fit on these is, for me, utter perfection. The have excellent arch support, fit snugly in the heel (a rarity) and also have a bit of wiggle room in the toe box. My toes require a little freedom, something most well-fitting shoes do not provide. Their special "shoe technology" is for real. The soles are curved and reinforced in a way that really seems to help with the idiosyncrasies of my gait. I pronate markedly, and have a serious heel strike issue. This has resulted in serious pain when I've worn other shoes. I do not have that problem with these, and it is a relief and a joy.
Size-wise: I generally wear an 8.5 or 9, sometimes wide-width. It all depends on the shoe. For these, the standard-width size 9 is a perfect fit for me.
One negative note: these laces just do not want to stay tied. This was true of my old pain too. A double knot is effective, as are "lace-biter" type things.
These shoes do have several pros:
1. Thick sole, so you do not feel every rock under your feet when walking on gravel
2. My toes felt well protected (it didn't hurt if I bumped my foot on a rock while hiking)
3. My feet did not get wet during light rain
These hiking shoes are fantastic!
When they arrived I tried them on and instantly my feet were in heaven. The arch support is perfect and is built for higher arches. I love that they are not high (over the ankle) but still offer lots of sturdiness and support. The traction is also great. They are a little wider than they look in the picture (which is fine because I like to wear thicker socks with my hiking shoes).
I hiked 16 miles in these shoes the first time I wore them and didn't have any blisters/sores, and had very little foot pain.
I recommend getting a half size bigger if you usually wear thicker socks.
I also strongly recommend buying these shoes! They are perfect for my feet and I love them. I was a little wary of buying hiking shoes online because I know that everyone is different (and I am very picky when it comes to what goes on my feet) but they turned out amazing!
Good luck in your endeavors!
