I can feel what's underfoot and my feet can bend over obstacles without balancing on them as with a traditional running shoe. When transitioning to these shoes (I just went cold turkey), you will notice soreness in muscles you didn't even realize you had. However, the pain I can only attribute to my persistent heel striking in traditional shoes is now gone. I had horrible, and I mean horrible shin splints, and they are also completely gone. I do have some muscle soreness, but that's mostly just me being pretty out of shape, and it's a "good" pain, not a pain that I would attribute to an injury, or a pain I can't train through. It goes away with a hot bath.
Overall, this is a great, fun-looking, lightweight, cool shoe. I can feel the air on my feet when I run which is a far cry from my old damp/hot, overpadded trainers. Ditch the padding! This shoe forces you to change your biomechanics back to what nature intended: a shorter stride, faster cadence, upright posture, and springy landing on the forefoot. This minimizes injuries by keeping you in tune with your body and the ground.
Bonuses: 1. the fabric has a really cool reptilian feel to it.
2. The styling is adorable.
3. THE COLORS! DOUBLE RAINBOW ALL THE WAY ACROSS THE SKY! IT'S SO BEAUTIFUL!
Anyway, personally, I love this shoe - If it came in just black I would order three more pair, for every day wear, golf, hiking, running, everything.
While I love how these shoes felt on and initially would have given them 5 stars, in mid-June after not much more than 2 months of wear, the insides began to come apart--specifically the fabric lining under the ball of my foot became torn in both shoes. I will not be purchasing this particular style of Merrell Barefoot shoes again. My other pairs lasted a year or more in good condition, so these were not the quality I expected from Merrell. While they felt like heaven on my feet for the first month and a half, I shouldn't have to replace my shoes after two months of working and moseying around the neighborhood.
So, when my father-in-law came to visit, wearing these and RAVING about them! I knew I had to have them!
Per his suggestion, as well as many reviewers, I sized down a half size to ensure that they fit as they seem to trend on the large side.
In all Merrells, I'm consistently a size 7, in regular gym shoes, a 6.5...so logically, I went with the 6.5.
Major bummer! While I can tell this shoe will be INCREDIBLY comfortable, flexible, and great for dancing (which is what I want them for...I'm a Zumba instructor) they're just baaarely too short!
My toe pokes up against the tip of the shoe which isn't too uncomfortable for regular wear but will definitely start to bother me while working out/dancing.
I've already ordered replacements in the next half size up (SAD that this color option isn't currently in a 7) so we'll see how those go.
But man, I would absolutely love it if a 7 fits perfectly because I can just tell these will be my next favorite shoe!
So maybe with larger sizes, they trend toward being big, but for little feet, maybe they're closer to true-to-size.
