Amazon.com
The theatrical trailer included in this DVD release of Merrills Marauders, touting its depiction of "World War IIs most fabulous jungle fighters (as) they showed the world what the American soldier can do," makes director Samuel Fullers 1962 film sound like jingoistic propaganda, but its considerably more than that. The year is 1944; the U.S. Armys 5307th Composite Unit, a 3000-strong outfit under the command of Brigadier General Frank Merrill (Jeff Chandler), has already been fighting the occupying Japanese forces in the wilds of Burma for several months when theyre assigned to march hundreds of miles through jungles, swamps, and mountains to Myitkyina, a town of considerable strategic importance and the gateway to India, where the Allies fear the Japanese and Nazis will meet and consolidate their forces. Mission impossible? So it would seem, as the men are exhausted, disease-ridden, disheartened, and ill-equipped; his second in command, Lt. Stockton (Ty Hardin), argues that they'll never make it, but Merrill (who has a heart condition that could bring him down at any moment) refuses to let up. There are numerous combat sequences, most of them quite convincing (including a very cool scene in a concrete maze), but the films strength lies not only in its graphic chronicling of the obvious horrors of war but in its sympathetic (but never condescending) portrayal of the more quotidian aspects of these soldiers' miserable lives, from easy banter to quarrels over food and ammunition, from the interactions with locals to the sheer hell of simply walking another step when youve already passed the limits of human endurance. Grim, gritty, intense, and realistic (Fuller was an Army vet himself), this is an effective precursor to the directors best-known movie, The Big Red One. --Sam Graham

And now, having watched this for the 1st time in over 4 plus decades - I am pleased to announce this is one of the better war movies of it's time - and still easily holds up to today's war flicks.
A true story, Merrill's Marauders takes the viewer on a wild ride, portraying the American soldier as they were back then, heroes who brazenly perform feats that most soldiers never did at this level, nor for this long in dangerous, dark territory.
Fantastically directed - especially for its time - and wonderfully portrayed by a host of solid actors, Merrill's Marauders is a mesmerizing movie of thrills, chills, and does a pretty outstanding job of telling this truly heroic tale.
Fans of Warner Brothers TV shows of the early '60s will recognize many actors under contract to the studio, like Will Hutchins (Sugarfoot), Ty Hardin (Bronco), Andrew Duggan (Room For One More), and Peter Brown (Lawman), plus character actors like Claude Akins and John Hoyt (as General Stilwell).
The story is mostly factual though some aspects are underplayed or omitted (like deputy commander Col Hunter, who took over after Merrill was medically evacuated), so it's not a complete account. Of note is the portrayal of a Nisei sergeant serving as a scout and interpreter with a recon platoon; there were a number of Nisei serving with distinction in the Marauders, and half received battelfield commissions.
Like most of war films by WW2 infantry veteran Fuller, it has a lot of realistic action, with lots of emphasis on the lives and plight of the foot soldier. There are better war films to be sure, but this one is still quite good.
The color and CinemaScope are so perfect for this narrative of war not being hell..in hell there are no innnocent bystanders. The graphic scenes of violence for 1962 can only be compared to Fuller himself, earlier than Kubrick. The dead are everywhere, walked by as if alive. Soldiers beg Chandler to bury gthe dead and he snarls at these requests. They are dead. Who cares? One soldier wants to know where a certain Jones is. The soldier dies and it turns out that he is Jones. Merrill doesn't know his men, only their arms to carry a gun and feet to march to his orders. Scene after scene shows the horror of wwII against the Japanese with unflinching photography and A List acting. It's like a documentary, brutal, stark, unsemntimental.
Watch the sun set before the final battle, and then the sunrise, so exquisite..and then the horror. No film does this, none that I can thik of, except Saving Private Ryan, a superb film by Spielberg. But even Spielberg must yield to Fuller.
A film that will shoick yoiu, move you, and upset any preconceived ideas about the so-called smoothness of getting the Japanese and Nazis in order again. This film scalds the imagination whereas others, while brilliant, only burn.
All of Fuller's films are worth every penny spent. A master who tells us what will make us insane..war, manipulation, greed, and a disdain for the spirit that exists within and without a huiman being.
