Mary meets Crispin a Duke that would rather read books than go to the social season. He meets Mary and thinks she’s beautiful and that she loves books like him they really get along. But her stepmother decides that he’s for her daughter and sets out to destroy anything between them. Will he listen to the gossip or follow his heart? As I was reading this book, I could not help think it was similar to another story that I read recently. A few other reviewers mention this too. I agree it is very similar to Amanda Seabrook’s Spellbound by a Dazzling Beauty. The main character in both stories have the same name and the basic story plot involves an evil stepmother and stepsister trying to ruin Lady Mary’s chance at love. I read the book because I did receive an ARC copy and wanted to provide an honest review.

I actually liked this version of the story slightly better because I enjoyed Lord Crispin’s character and other details more than in the other story. If you enjoy sweet romances and Cinderella story plots you will enjoy this book.

A Cinderella themed tale is what Ms. Norton is offering the reader in this lovely book. It is well written and a very sweet story. Will the hero get his act together? Will the evil stepmother get her way? Will Mary and Crispin find happiness together? The main characters were not dramatic or over the top they were normal people with normal likes and I really enjoyed them. This was a nice story with a nice ending.

This story did remind me a little of the Cinderella story. However there is only 1 stepsister and there is a fathe,r even thought he has given up most control to stepmother. The stepmother, Rachel and her daughter, Charlotte are all about getting Charlotte married to someone who is wealthy and titled. What will happen when Lord Crispin Dunaway, the Duke of Hanbrooke, takes an interest in Mary instead of her sister? Fortunately for Mary, she has a wonderful supportive friend, Sarah. What actions will Rachel & Charlotte do once they decided Lord Dunaway should be the one for Charlotte? The storyline is pretty easy to follow without too many surprises.

Like another reviewer I had also read Amanda Seabrook’s Spellbound by a Dazzling Beauty and this book is almost identical to it with the heroine even having the same name. Are these two authors the same person and just forgot which name this should be published under? The story line is good with a wicked stepmother and a redeemable stepsister. The hero is a shy bookish duke who is very likable. I just skimmed through it as I thought I had read it before, but it was worth reading once and if it is the first time for you it is at least 4 stars.

Sorry but this is poor quality writing. There doesn’t appear to be any knowledge of the history of the period. A Duke was called Your Grace and would have much more authority over others than written here. Couldn’t finish it as it was like reading a teen fiction without substance.
