Editorial Reviews

"This story killed my emotions in ways I didn't think was possible. The characters were beautifully written and I felt like I was along on their journey with them, and going through all of their heartbreak the same time they were. So seriously, this book is highly recommended." Sabrina from Escape to Reading

"A mess of a Man by A.M. Hargrove & Terri E. Laine makes you think about what you would do if faced with some of the choices presented in the novel, an emotional read for sure. The story has a slow build but the love story that is developing is one that is worth the wait." Books and Boys Book Blog

"This story was so captivating, intriguing and highly addictive that I read way past my bedtime. It's an emotional journey that left me heartbroken at one point but the authors were able to piece my heart back together in order to leave me with a heartwarming feeling. I strongly recommend giving this story a serious chance." Diane from TDC Book Reviews

"Ben was truly a mess of a man, I felt sorry for him at times, I fell in love with him but also wanted to strangle him at times too. He was everything I look for in my Book Boyfriend, Hot, Dirty Talker Highly successful Business Man ( The Suits also helped) a truly wonderful and emotional read." Mandy from 2 Girls & Their Kindles

"It made me ugly cry again damn it. I rarely ugly cry when I read a book, but Terri and A.M. seem to hit the nail on the head in that aspect." Five Stars from Addicted2Books

OMG what an amazing emotional story so glad I had an ARC from A.M. Hargrove & Terri E. Laine!!! I would make one suggestion since the writers are saying this is a standalone, the best way to understand this womanizer, Man Whore, Player, Heartbreaker that is named Ben is that you read Cruel & Beautiful first, so you will understand his feelings and his way of living.

But what started as a casual thing between Ben and Sam will turn out in a love story but not a simple one. How will Ben deal with the fact that Sam has the cancer gean? Will Ben let her go before he again loses a person he loves or will he fight together with Sam?

Will their relationship survive it or will they both live without their love?

You will feel your own emotions go in overdrive because they way it's written makes you feel your part of their relationship. Make sure you have a box of tissues next to you!!

Ben Rhoades has no interest in love, commitment or anything that would involve invested emotions or long term because he knows that it can't last or blows up in his face. I wasn't exactly a fan of Ben initially, he was rather self-absorbed and arrogant, thinking he can mistreat people or use them and then discard them. Aside from his interactions with women who aren't his mother or sister, he's a decent guy otherwise. He works hard, he's loyal to his friends and he does have a heart buried underneath his callous behavior. After he lost his best friend, Ben has been lost and miserable.

Sam Calhoun has had more than her fair share of disappointments when it comes to men. She's not sure what she's missing, but she can't seem to find the right guy to treat her the way she deserves. I really liked Sam, she didn't play games or be anyone but herself. She's independent, self-motivated and compassionate. Ben meets her and can't get her out of his head.

The real test comes when Ben and Sam get to know each other and have to decide if they want to just be casual or something more serious because Ben doesn't do serious and Sam doesn't do casual. Not to mention that Ben's past as womanizer keeps coming back at him and Sam has to follow up on a concerning personal issue that could drive Ben away. The relationship development was well paced and natural. For as annoying as Ben was, he did make up for it eventually where I warmed up to him. I really empathized with Sam's dilemma and what she went through, because that's a difficult situation to be in and she had to prioritize herself first. Interesting story overall, a few of the secondary characters felt overly exaggerated. However, there's a meaningful underlying message.

A Mess of a Man by AM Hargrove and Terri E Laine
4 stars!!!

“Sometimes, love isn’t enough.”

After reading Cruel and Beautiful by these two authors I fell in love with the way that these two write together and I was itching for this book. Although A Mess of a Man can be read as a standalone I do recommend you read Cruel and Beautiful first so that you can get an idea of the man that Ben Rhoades really is because the man in this book is quite frankly…a mess. While Cruel and Beautiful is not Ben’s story he does feature and you will get a greater understanding as to why Ben is the way he is for the majority of this book.

Ben Rhoades is going through the five stages of grief, except he hasn’t really moved on from stage one. Although it has been over a year Ben cannot move on from losing his best friend, a best friend he has had since child hood, he still goes to call him when he needs advice, he still talks to thin air in the vague hope that his best friend can hear and give him the impartial advice that he was renowned for, he feels him all around, yet he isn’t and Ben just isn’t coping very well.

His grief manifests itself in an intense work load and a manwhore type attitude. He daren’t get close to anyone just in case. He’s a heart breaker but he goes into liaisons letting the women know exactly what they are getting…nothing…just his dick. He is extremely closed off, extremely lost and flailing from day to day just trying to get through without losing his mind and trying his hardest to prove his self-worth to his Dad. His grief is deep and debilitating, as far as he is concerned there is no end in sight, he just desperately misses his best friend.

ARC provided in exchange for an honest review.

I must confess I was terrified when I started to read Ben’s story. Who has read “Cruel & Beautiful” must understand why. On that note, you must read “Cruel & Beautiful” before “A mess of a man”. Although “A mess of a man” is a standalone, I strongly recommend that you read “Cruel & Beautiful” before for three reasons: one, you will find spoilers that will ruin the magic that surrounds Cate & Drew’s story; two, you won’t fully understand Ben if you’re not aware of his background and his past with Drew and; three, because “Cruel & Beautiful is a MUST READ (period)!
“A mess of a man” is the kind of story that is so real that it can actually happen to any one of us.
Ben is a shattered man, a womanizer, a man completely lost in his life. The only goal he has? Go one day at the time, preferably with one beautiful lady by his side.
Sam is a successful twenty – four year old woman, beautiful, funny and a little broken from a previous relationship that went wrong.
They meet accidentally but the spark between them is almost instant and together they’re explosive.
They both want to play but somehow end up losing their game for each other.
The story is told in a dual POV so you have the chance to get inside both their minds. I love when this happens because I feel more connected to them. I love to know both sides of the story.
The main issue is complicated but very very timely and it makes you think about the little things in life. The ones that usually you take for granted.
The story is also hot (very hot, actually). Ben is a sex God! No doubt about that! For several times I felt like I wanted to put my hands on that chest and that hair! Oh My God, that hair!!!
