I am a chef with 25 years working in professional kitchens. This is a very poorly made piece of cutlery. The "diamond" surface is just a coating on the sharpening rod that started peeling off after about 2 weeks of use. I have other diamond steels that are over 15 years old and with very heavy use and they are still going strong. Do not buy this diamond steel. It's junk.

The surface is some kind of coating like a gritty aluminum foil that started peeling off on its first use. I refuse to use it for fear of this coating ending up in my food. Pay the extra money and buy one that will last you years.

I have to say that I am pretty disappointed with this since I am normally satisfied with Messermeister products. I purchased this product back in May around the same time that I started a new job as a prep/line cook at a country club. For the first few weeks this performed very well and had that been the end of it this would have been a five-star review. Fast-forward to July, and I realize my knives aren't sharpening like they're supposed to. I finally realize that 90% of the "diamond" coating is gone despite seeing light duty after only about a month of use, leaving me with nothing more than a metal billy-club.

I got this sharpening steel to touch up my knives between sharpenings. It is great and puts a fine edge on my knives. It actually sharpens knife blades, rather then resetting the edge like a normal steel does. Just a few stroke and you are in business.
