The idea of a distinctive Messiah, with a specific role, was not definitively established across all the Jewish movements of the Second Temple era. Some groups expected multiple messiahs, and some did not expect one at all. Our focus is on the topic of the Messiah and how different groups understood this office. We can draw some understanding regarding an expectation of a Messiah. The Messiah is generally understood to be a person who at the end of history or the present world order will bring salvation to Israel.

This is a very well documented and well written review of Second Temple Judaism and its literature. It was all very informative and held my interest. I found the material on Baruch and Enoch very interesting and somewhat evocative of some NT writings. I found the concept of the Memra as the Word as very intriguing and fits in with the Binitarianism of Second Temple Judaism.

The author presents a strong technical analysis and comprehensive overview of important literature on the topic. However, be prepared for numerous typographical and occasional grammatical errors.

I enjoy the overall flow of Rabbi Juan's writing, it is thoughtful, articulate, and without restricting the opinion of the reader and allowing freedom of thought. He is an excellent scholar of Jewish history.

This book is a very little but very good introduction to the different ideas about the Messiah we have in Second Temple Jews literature. I really appreciate the quotes from books like 1 Enoch, 4 Ezra, Psalms of Solomon and the Targumim.

This book is an easy read. It is not long enough to become boring and it is very well documented. I am planning to use many of the quotations from this book for my Doctorate thesis regarding the changing Jewish concepts of the Messiah through out millennia.

This book is a quick read and easily breaks down the messianic views of many Jewish sects of that time period. It is filled with references, allowing the reader to easily verify the information presented. It's a very interesting study.

Does what it does very well, which is to give an summary of eschatological texts during second temple Judaism. I would have liked a bit more of a commentary, but maybe I'm guilty of wishing he had written a different book from the one he wrote.
