We are sending the grinder in on warranty, but we'll see if they honor it.
UPDATE 6/18/13: WARRANTY DENIED BY METABO. Contacted Metabo they told me to send the grinder to their warranty department, which I did. About a week later I received a letter stating that the grinder was overloaded and the warranty was Denied. Well, I guess the overload mechanism they advertise is not part of the warranty. Metabo sent me an estimate to fix of $59.00, plus shipping and handling charges. All together with freight to get it there, repair, and return freight, it cost another $80.00. Total investment in 1 grinder: $260.00. I could have bought almost 3 Dewalt Grinders for the price of One Metabo. Would not recommend and I will be buying Dewalt from now on.
UPDATE 7/8/13: Gave Metabo the go ahead to fix the grinder by faxing back the repair authorization form. Couple of weeks went by, I emailed them to check on it to the included email address. No Response. Then today the grinder showed up in a box completely disassembled in pieces. What a failure of service.
I noticed that when I hold the Metabo's my hand covers the rear vents, wonder if that contributed to the over heating? The other grinders seem to have avoided this issue by designing their air vents differently. Two of my other grinders, Fein WSG 14-70 E 5-Inch Variable Speed Angle Grinders, also German, are variable speed which allows me a good direct comparison. When I don't need variable speed I use one of two DEWALT D28115 Heavy-Duty 4-1/2-Inch/5-Inch High Performance Grinder with Trigger Grip, at just over $100 they are performing well, consider I use them for my dirtiest jobs (thinking if I burn up a grinder I want to burn up the least expensive grinder). The DeWalt has also designed the air flow to minimize debris accumulation. When I opened it to clean it it was clean.
By the way I use it for business, and am a welder and millwright.

For my first time doing granite fabrication and installation, I chose my VS grinder carefully, doing a lot of research. This Metabo won out and was a pleasure to use. Read morePublished 15 months ago by jrrjrr

A strong and performing tool. It does the job without any fear, grinding and cutting all day long.
