If you feel tired and hungry all the time—and can’t lose weight—insulin resistance and metabolic inflexibility could be why.

Through a compassionate lens, Metabolism Repair for Women explores how both eating behavior and energy expenditure are not under conscious control. Instead, they’re subject to the brain’s regulatory mechanism. And if you have metabolic dysfunction (i.e., insulin resistance, hypoglycemia, and/or weight gain), it’s because something is amiss with that regulatory mechanism. (This is the same book as The Metabolism Reset, available in Australia.)

As a solution, the book provides a 10-step plan for identifying your personal metabolic obstacles, such as hormonal issues, digestive problems, ultra-processed food, chronic stress, and medications. It then offers actionable strategies for overcoming those obstacles and explains why a simple intervention like fixing your gut can reverberate through your entire system to feel less hungry and burn more energy.

Written by a naturopathic doctor with more than 25 years of experience, the book contains up-to-date research, patient stories, and practical advice. It’s your reality-based guide to repairing your metabolism and reclaiming health.

This book has so much useful information! I bought it last night and stayed up late reading it. So good! Lots of great rec’s for supplements, nutrition, and so much more. I was very pleasantly surprised. I like how Dr Briden offers a nuanced take on everything, so I can customize the rec’s to my specific conditions. A lot of ”experts” offer a one size fits all approach to metabolic health, so Dr Briden’s approach is very much appreciated!

2.0 out of 5 stars it's tough to write this review...
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on July 28, 2024
The major issue with this book, is that it is (frankly) wrong on issues in several important areas.

To give a few examples, when it comes to thyroid conditions, the book states (p 247) 'taking so much thyroid hormone (either T4 or T3) that TSH is pushed below normal... is not a good idea and has been linked with a long-term risk of dementia'.

This is factually incorrect and alarmist. As someone who is herself on 45mcg of T3 and 50mcg of T4 to treat a thyroid condition, my TSH is 0.007 at the moment - and this is completely safe and to be expected when taking any considerable amount of T3. TSH is not a thyroid hormone, it's a pituitary hormone - and if your body is getting sufficient T3 exogenously, it's not going to be demanding more from your thyroid (so your TSH will be low).

Then, turning to female hormones (p 274), apparently if we are taking HRT 'appropriately' (whatever that means), we should not be aiming to achieve optimal pre-menopausal levels of estradiol. (You know, the levels which bestowed all the amazing health advantages we've just been told about.) We should be just 'gently supporting' estrogen rather than 'restor[ing] pre-menopausal levels'.

I'm not sure where this advice comes from, but assuming a woman is taking sufficient dosages of progesterone/progestin to protect the endometrium, there's not an upper limit on the amount of estrogen she can take. Many women in peri-menopause in particular need higher doses of estrogen to overcome hormonal fluctuations - their symptoms only resolve when levels are higher. Scaring women off higher doses is.... well, it's just not on, for so many reasons.

And then there's the line that 'if and when you eventually stop estrogen therapy, you're likely to experience rebound visceral fat gain'. Seeing there is currently no need for HRT to ever be stopped, this is not something women will need to deal with. The 'lowest dose for the shortest possible time' has been discredited along with the WHI now and the current guidelines in the UK at least, are that women should be allowed to continue HRT permanently, until death parts them from it... So fear not, women of menopausal age, the reasoning is not 'there's no point to starting HRT because you'll have to deal with all this fall out when you stop it anyway' - because you don't need to ever stop it. So, again, this is alarmist and factually incorrect.

You'd almost think there are zero long-term health consequences to the loss of estrogen at menopause, reading this book. After all (p 272) your brain and body will miraculously 'recalibrate and adapt to the lower estradiol level.' Why, then, are post-menopausal women at increased risk of dementia, cardiovascular disease and osteoporosis if they don't take HRT? Not such great recalibration going on, there...

I guess it is a step forwards from Briden's previous books - which seemed to recommend only progesterone and not estradiol at all. Maybe in 5 books' time she will finally be onboard with some of this advice. Until then I can't recommend this book. It's too inaccurate.

The book covers many other medical issues and has a lot of practical tips and bits of advice. Whilst those other areas may well have astoundingly accurate and up to date information, since the two issues I know about in depth are very inaccurately covered here, I just can't trust the rest of the book... I have no way of knowing if it is equally not up to speed on best practice.
