Unless you are (a) seriously into avant-garde and industrial music, (b) an obsessive collector of all things Lou Reed, and/or (c) an obsessive collector of German RCA imports, do not buy this album. It is not for you. I can almost guarantee that 75-80% of everyone on Earth who hears this album will hate it. Metal Machine Music is, among many other things, long, loud, complex, unsettling, bizarre, and advanced. By "advanced" I mean that perhaps some day in a postmodern future this kind of music will be standard fare on FM radio. But at this stage in human evolution, you either "get" or "don't get" Metal Machine Music. I get it. The full disturbing hour plays out like some kind of drug-inspired classical madness; snatches of riffs and melodies pop up here and there, but for the most part it all kind of blurs together into an imposing sonic wall of pure terror. But if that's not your thing, then don't waste your time or money. You'd probably be better off not knowing what a stoned misanthrope with two guitars, a leather jacket, and a contractual obligation is capable of.

A couple of weeks ago I watched CBGB, the movie about the night club on the Bowery where punk took its first baby steps. In the first scene, John Holstrom is sitting at a desk doing something and listening to... something. I had no idea what it was, it sounded very bizarre but I found it oddly appealing. Legs McNeil comes into the room and says something like "Oh gawd, you're listening to that feedback album again..." I intended to google to find out what it was when the movie was over, but during the end credits in the section where they listed all of the music I noticed "Metal Machine Music - written and performed by Lou Reed etc. etc." and I instantly realized that must have been it. I'd heard of MMM many times over the years, but whatever I heard must not have been very positive because I was never curious enough to bother checking it out. Never been a big fan of Lou Reed.

I just finished listening to the whole album for the first time. I really like it! Not easy to describe... Layers of cascading chaos, random moments of harmony, white noise repeatedly punctured by pure tones. I've had a taste for noise rock for a long time, and I really wish I'd listened to this sooner. It is surely the granddaddy, it must have been an influence on some of my favorites- Justin Broadrick (especially his "Final" project,) James Plotkin, The Boredoms... This album often reminds me of the chaotic yet uplifting material on Super AR (sp?) and Vision Creation Newsun. Yep, I really wish I'd heard this a lot sooner. I love this sort of thing.

Metal Machine Music remastered, eh? Say, any extra tracks? (Just kidding.) If you hate this CD you have no one to blame but yourself. It isn't Lou's fault; he's warned you on the cover. The album is legendary; if you've never heard it you don't need to- - you already know what it is. And forget all that stuff about clearing unwanteds from your party, etc. You can do that for a lot cheaper than the price of this CD (use your imagination, Lou did). Back in the heydey of the late, great lamented Creem magazine this was hot stuff- -everyone from Lester Bangs to Rick Johnson had their say (the "review" showing nothing but a full-length picture of Lou with the word NO typewritten all over it is a Creem Classic). Everyone who heard it (and as many who didn't) took it very seriously indeed. Except Lou- -whose tongue, planted firmly in cheek, wagged loads of incredibly intellectual nonsense concerning important things like harmonics and subharmonics affecting melodic amelodicism with undertones. So why should you? No, if you should somehow accidentally acquire this CD, play it loud and lie back and enjoy it. If you acquire it on purpose, congratulations. Play it loud and lie back and enjoy it. It hasn't dated a bit since 1975. How could it?

Frank Sinatra is God. MMM is why. I don't understand the folks here who say Frank was just shafting his record company. Yo, shafting record companies is a GOOD thing. In a billion years, long after the sappy Beatles and flaccid Stones have been forgotten, the only rock songs people (or whatever is around) will still listen to is Sister Ray and MMM. Someday Lou will get the Nobel Prize for this, Peace, Economics maybe, whatever. Yo, you say, only living people are awarded the Nobel Prize. Yes, Frank isn't dead, 'cause Frank is God and God can't die. A musical outfit called Zeitkratzer recorded a cover version of MMM on acoustic instruments. Live. Before a live audience. Cheeky. I'm pretty sure Dylan will get around to covering this too, since he's covering everything else Frank did.

The joke was on RCA records. When this came out in vinyl, a good friend of mine, who's dad worked PR for RCA, played it for me but refused to let me have a copy because his father and RCA were so outraged by it.
In 2012 bought the CD for the sake of completion of my music collection and listened to it once. After about 20 minutes, it makes me laugh at the utter absurdity of the thing.

Love this album. There will now never be anyway to know what this album truly is, so maybe we can just put all the stories and counter stories to rest. I do listen to a lot of "noise" music (Eno, Schaeffer, Mumma, Throbbing Gristle, etc.). This is not that, just because Lou seemed to be working on something else, some anti-music, anti-song, type of non-structure (maybe). There is very little variation in these tracks. Mostly the tones and textures within the first minute or so continue to modulate slightly throughout the track. These tracks do take on a life of their own though, almost like a person just blankly staring at a sunrise and not thinking anything for 15 minutes (yes, it would make you go blind and yes, this album might make you react that same way). Just give it a listen if you are at all interested and see it for yourself - just don't stare too long.

Just in time for summer! head to the park or the beach, crank up your Bluetooth speaker and let this bad boy album rip! The ladies LOVE records made begrudgingly by artists who are contractually obligated.

I bought this because the reviews were so frightening. An hour of feedback? It can't be just that can it?

It can!

Fab but it is not going to leave you humming the tune or soothing the baby to sleep.

Play it when:

a. you are in the mood
b. you have guests and you want them to go
c. you want to annoy your partner
d. you are driving down a posh street with the windows down and you want to be anti-social
e. or if you just love guitar feedback and can't get enough of it
