So this supplement contains calcium carbonate, which is the chemical name for chalk. The citrate form of most vitamins/micronutrients is the most highly absorbable form. It is also quite a bit more expensive. Why add that when you can just add chalk (calcium carbonate) and make everyone think that they're getting their daily allowance of Ca+ and then some; plus charge more and hence maximize your profit?

This supplement also contains titanium dioxide, commonly used as a pigment, and strongly suspected to be a carcinogen.

However, the psyllium husk contained herein is great. Go for the Metamucil capsules for "digestive and heart health" with the red label; and get your calcium elsewhere! Find a high quality absorbable form like calcium citrate or calcium malate.

I hope that this is working for a lot of you, but it is not working for me. I have Irritable Bowel Syndrome and have had to use psyllium fiber for a number of years. I used to use Metamucil with Calcium and did not notice any problems. Maybe about 2 years ago I was no longer able to get this in the stores so I switched to Target's Up & Up brand and had no major complaints. Well, I couldn't find that one week when I needed it, so I decided to spend more than double on this. I don't know if my condition has worsened or if they changed the formula, but I am in so much pain! Here's where it gets a little detailed so I will apologize in advance. Since taking this, I have had the WORST hemorrhoids ever. Instead of improving the consistency of my bowel movements, it makes them a lot more frequent and not very satisfying. Regardless, this is not helping and I am hurting so bad right now. I will spend the $4+ on Target's brand and stick to that and find another way to supplement my calcium.

The thing about taking your psyllium this way is that being in capsule form, the manufacturer doesn't have to add sugar or artificial sweetener. And everyone who has struggled with the powder form knows how hard it is to keep the stuff in suspension long enough to get it down. In addition, I have always been reluctant to send something that expands into a semi-solid mass down the drain, having a picture in my mind of the eventual clog that could result from repeated washing of the glass. So there's a lot to be said for this form.

I suppose there may be a worry that people won't take the capsules with enough water. And I couldn't find any indication of exactly how much is in each capsule. You can either break one open and measure it or guess based on the dosing instructions. At any rate I wanted some in capsule form for traveling, when doing the mixing dance is too complicated.

So the worst downside is cost. Figure they're telling you to take 5 of these capsules 4 times daily. Holy smokes, that means for this price you get six days worth for this price! One little hint is that even the World's Smallest Wally World in my town carries their generic version, this much for four dollars and forty-nine cents. Huh!

But there's another downside: the dyes they have put in. I can't think of any reason for needing dye in a capsule and the ones included are a real problem for susceptible individuals. Just Google them.

I liked the regular Metamucil Capsules (red label), so I tried Metamucil Capsules plus Calcium. Gave me gas. I agree with previous reviewer, if you want Calcium, try Calcium Citrate with Vitamin D.

I have used these fiber supplements for years - besides giving you the fiber you need it is believed to help to reduce cholesterol. Sometimes I have a difficult time swallowing them but have found that drinking water before and during taking them helps.

I take Metamucil in its many forms regularly. It takes a few days for it to start working, and it must be taken with lots of fluids or else it can cause choking or a blockage of the gut.

The advantage of capsule form with calcium is that it doesn't need to be mixed in water and I can avoid the gritty residue of the powder. I also get a little extra calcium. However, it may be difficult for some people to swallow. When I first started taking them, I had the sensation that they would float, so it took extra effort to swallow them. They also give me lots of gas, but that gets better with time.

I think the primary disadvantage of the capsule form is the number of capsules that must be taken. At five capsules per dose, taken the maximum of four times per day, a bottle of 120 capsules only lasts ten days. I only take three capsules a day, and that is enough to keep things running smoothly for me. That doesn't give me nearly enough of what I need in calcium every day (5 capsules = 300 mg calcium), but every little bit helps.

One side note: as a general rule, try not to take Metamucil with other medications, as it can impede absorption.

I can't speak to their effectiveness as i stopped taking them after TWICE the pills' coating dissolved before it reached my stomach and i coughed up a plume of fiber, coating my throat and nasal passage in a gelatinous film, which by the way feels awful, like you're being suffocated. It's not like i don't know how to eat a pill. This seems to be a product flaw. A scary one at that. Consider yourself warned.
