We supposedly need 35 gms of fiber every day. One teaspoon of this non-flavored powder supplies about 3 gm. Taken 3 times a day, you can get a nice supplemental dose of the fiber you need. And I definitely needed a little boost. It takes a lot of veggies to gather that much fiber in a diet. So a simple supplement like this one makes total sense. I feel so much better both in body and spirit, knowing that I'm getting at least part of my fiber from this stuff, mixed into some nice non-caffeine Bigelow tea with natural honey, without harmful ingredients.
Contains only psyllium husk, maltodextrin, which is a thickener and citric acid which is found in citrus fruits.
Gluten-free. Sugar-free. 5 mg sodium. 20 cal per serving.

Work up to the 3 teaspoons slowly if you decide to use this. You can get a lot of gas if not done slowly...then of course, you'd be turned off. But going slowly, you pretty much avoid the gas, and this fiber source is great. I do 3 teaspoons everyday in my tea, that is, one cup with one teaspoon at a time, and I plan to continue. I know that I am sloppy on getting enough fiber from regular food.

Obviously since this is not flavored you could put it in anything, even your dinner. BUT, one caveat, it dissolves best in heat, or something hot, liquid being the easiest. So if you want to put it in say, cold orange juice, dissolve it in a bit of hot water first.

Oh, and occasionally if it sits in your beverage for awhile, it can get a jelly bean sized piece of gel. Not to worry. It is tasteless, and only happens if you nurse the drink. Directions say to add a bit more liquid if this happens. I don't mind the jelly bean once in a while. LOL

I don't like sugar and while I am not one of those people who blames Aspertame for all of life's problems I'd rather not use artificial sweeteners either if I can avoid it. I didn't know Metamucil even made this stuff any more. I mean who buys this stuff? But fortunately they do still sell it. Other than the sweetener thing it's just like any other Metamucil

I've sampled a few different varieties of fiber supplements, including both Benefiber and off-brands, and I found that Metamucil provided the most fiber in the least offensive beverage. Compared to the other brands, this stuff is smoother textured, and goes down easier, as a sort of happy medium between the grittier supplements and the thicker ones.

What about effectiveness? I have apocalyptic IBS, and since starting to take this stuff regularly (one giant glass every morning and evening), my BMs have been much more regular, and more manageable. Flare-ups happen less, and it even seems to do a decent job when taken with meals of cutting the hit to my stomach and gut. I tend to take more than the recommended amount, with an even larger serving of water, as I feel like it helps me stay hydrated and full throughout the day.

I started taking the classic orange Metamucil, but although I really liked the superior flavor (rather like Orange Tang) it packed several times more sugar in each serving than fiber, so while it was great for digestive health, the overall health impact was too negative. I also sampled the sugar-free berry flavors, but found that, although it was ostensibly healthier, the flavor wasn't great, and in addition it suffered from the aspartame aftertaste and further effects (Aspartame gives me headaches). So this was a dilemma for me. What to do? I actually wrote to Metamucil about it, and they recommended this product. The downside is that it comes with absolutely no flavor, so you need to provide your own in order to mask the texture (I wouldn't dream of trying to mix this in plain water--yuck!) The upside is they pack 100+ servings into a container, and you really are free to blend it into whatever suits your fancy.

No flavors; Clean and Inoffensive!
Tried the stuff from Trader Joe's When I couldn't find anything but the orange flavored Metamucil for a while. I itched all over when I used the other stuff - it had dark colored particle mixed in and was not very pure appearing. As soon as I was able to buy smooth texture sugar free, the itching stopped. I mix this in after I cook oatmeal each morning and voile, my fiber for the day is done.

I was getting worried about all the aspartame I was ingested with the Orange flavored sugar free. For the price, it should be made with splenda or stevia. So I have ordered the unflavored and mix it with juice. Have just ordered a variety pack of powdered juice flavored packets sweetened with truvia. Hopefully, will be easier to get down. It IS smooth textured and mixes easily. I gave it 4 rather than 5 stars because it does have a flavor that is rather unpleasant. I was hoping to just mix with water. Decades ago I used a product that tasted and smelled a bit like dried oats - pleasant aroma.

I was hoping for straight-smooth fiber. No sugar. No artificial sugar. Just a smooth texture because the other "Smooth Textures" have that orange flavor that's so sharp... thought this would be a nice addition (1 spoon orange, 1 spoon "Sugar Free") to ease the sweetness.

Unfortunately, the Metamucil Sugar Free Original Smooth Texture has an odd, but worse - sharply sweet/bitter flavor. The only added ingredient "Maltodextrin" must be the cause... I guess it's necessary, but this is strictly for those who... well, just need no SUGAR.

But this is NOT tasteless. However, it IS smooth as the other Metamucil "Smooth Textures" are, it IS quality, just very misleading...

It should have the simple warning: MAY CONTAIN AWFUL FLAVOR.

I'll wait for a "NO FLAVOR" version.. if and when that exists! I'm guessing maltodextrin is essential in keeping the fiber dry in case... there must be some reason they added it. Prevent spoilage?

Jeff
