I purchased this to soften the rubber sheathing of some audio cables that have become quite stiff over the years. One-part wintergreen oil to four-parts solvent - I used alcohol but xylene works as well. This also works on other rubber components, such as boots and flanges on automobiles.
I soaked my part for twenty-four hours, but this will vary depending on the size of of the component and type of rubber it is made of, as well as its age. You don't want to soak it too long, as this will cause it to swell, and on cables it can cause the sheath to become detached/loosened from the underlying wire. Just soak it enough to soften the part as desired. I would caution against using this on badly cracked cables or components - it will still soften it, but you may lose structural integrity.
The effect is longer lasting than re-heating the cable, and unlike brake fluid, you don't end up with the oil bleeding out of the rubber again as it dries.
This particular methyl salicylate seemed to work very well, so would recommend.
