This Eco Ball was *perfect*. It gave us the grip we need, and didn't leave chalk marks all over the floor, equipment, or us. It doesn't even really show up on your hands. The ball is especially useful for keeping the dust under control. I have a feeling that even if I got this kind of chalk outside of the ball form, it would get everywhere.
So, I don't know about rock-climbing, but for weightlifting, this little Eco Ball gets the job done. When we finally use up the one we have, I will definitely be getting another one.
Anyway, overall a fairly clean and good product, just not perfect and with some draw backs.
So out of desperation we tried the Metolius Eco Chalk and it is fantastic! It leaves very little residue even for the client who pounds it in his hands and creates a mushroom cloud. It is sticky and does work well on sweaty hands. As mentioned in the other reviews...it does dry your hands out. While it is a more expensive that a chalk bag it is a far better solution for a gym setting.
I attend a family gym that doesn't allow chalk. Too messy and perhaps too intimidating to some of the patrons. But not using chalk can be a real problem when lifting heavy.
I bought an Eco Ball last fall. Brought it in and showed it to gym management; showed how it wasn't like the other stuff. They gave me a thumbs up. I've been using it ever since and I'm very happy with it.
With a little effort you can press enough chalk out of the bag to create a visible layer on your hands. Or get just enough to take the slickness off your hands.
Whatever your preference, the chalk helps tremendously with grip. It's allowed in my "no-chalk" gym. It's convenient to carry around. It costs about the same as a McDonald's Happy Meal and should last for months. I don't have a complaint.
-Cleaner than my old chalk hunk in a bag
-Less (visible) mess. My gym is gracious about chalk usage, but if yours isn't, this would probably be stealthy enough if you're discreet
-Seemingly more drying power than the chalk I had been using, so I use less
-Does dry the hands just like it says it will. Not a big deal for me personally
-Way easier to manage in a fabric bag instead of the plastic baggie it comes in. The purple bag everyone's favorite whiskey comes in would be about the right size.
Edit: by way of update this is still going strong for me as of October 2013. I'd say the longevity--for lifters anyway, is excellent.

Works great! I've got sensitive skin & this ball doesn't dry my hands out. It also seems to stay on better/longer than white chalk & I like that it doesn't dirty the rock (though... Read morePublished 2 months ago by Supreme Goddess
Long lasting product, but it comes off of hands quickly. If you need to use it at a gym that doesn't allow chalk I would definitely recommend it.Published 2 months ago by Steven Whittlesey
The Eco Ball works well for climbing. I only have to apply a thin film to get the desired drying effect. Read morePublished 2 months ago by Marceline
I would not recommend this to anyone. This does not in anyway compare to the grip of regular solid chalk or liquid chalk. Read morePublished 4 months ago by Ethan
Great to take to the gym instead of a plastic box for powder chalk. Still leaves some residue, not as bad as other alternatives.Published 4 months ago by Matthew Akin
Great for weight lifting when you don't want to make a mess. It works just as well as chalk.Published 5 months ago by Justin K.
