Overall, this chalk bag works well for me in my weightlifting application. However, it is intended for bouldering or rock climbing and given this use, I would rather have a bag of pure chalk to ensure I get as much grip as possible.

For weightlifting in a public gym at my college, this works pretty well. What I am trying to accomplish with this bag of chalk, as opposed to a solid chalk brick (which I use at my home gym), is to not make a mess. I do not know if my gym allows chalk, but I'd rather just not ask to avoid someone telling me I cannot use it. So I use it responsibly and without drawing attention to myself. Given the world we live in today, they would probly ask me to not use it so I do not agrivate someone's allergies around me. Its comical to think about, but people are ridiculous.

This bag of chalk gets an adequate amount on your hands, providing a significantly better grip. Someone like me really needs these benefits as my hands sweat pretty bad, especially when exerting myself in activities such as powerlifting. It is not as good as the sold chalk block but it gets the job done. As previously noted, it does a nice job at keeping things clean as long as common sense is used and you do not pound the bag into oblivion, sending clouds of chalk across the gym. The other benefit to the bag is that it will conserve the chalk a little bit longer. I have had mine for about 6 months and it is about halfway full. Not bad. At it has a drawstring closure so you can refill it and it does not leak as it keeps a tight seal.

I recommend this bag for those in this situation. If you are simply looking for the best performance, a chalk block will be a lot better as it has a much better capability to cause build up on the bar. The chalk build up helps improve grip even more.

The chalk bag comes filled - however I found that out of the packaging it's pretty worthless. I have to take it and basically throw it into my hand (like a baseball player trying to break in a glove) to get chalk on my hands. Gripping it I could get a light layer, but not really any significant amount.

I did empty the bag, crushed up the chalk even more and did find it worked a little better. But the results aren't particularly pleasing. It takes either tight gripping of the bag or to get better results: some sort of impact against my hand (ie throwing it) to get chalk up. Throwing it is less than ideal since I don't particularly enjoy breathing chalk.

It does work it just doesn't work particularly well. I don't think I could recommend this to anyone.

i bought this for my chalk bag as my indoor gym does not allow loose chalk. when i got it the chalk was a little chunky but i was able to crush it with my hands with out removing the chalk from the sock. it still has some chunks in it but the chalk has started flowing nicly from it. as i need a better flow i break up a few more chunks of the chalk and go.

overall a nice chalk ball.

The material used for this sock is too thick and not porous enough. I can not get an adequate amount of chalk on my hands without really having to force it around in my hand, even then the amount of chalk is minimal. I actually think the majority of the chalk that does stick is from the residual chalk in my bag. I was using the Black Diamond refillable ball until it was taken from me. Needless to say I will be buying a new BD sock soon.

Seriously the worst product you can buy. The cheap price is there for a reason. The chalk is in the bag and the chalk comes out. But NOTHING i mean NOTHING gets on your hands. It's absolutely terrible. Metolius, please purchase some crayola chalk and crush it up and then put that in your packages. Because you're basically creating fairy dust that doesn't stick.

Goal: Find a ball that would help reduce the chalk spillage if the chalk bag is knocked over - SUCCESS

Bonus: Hoped for one that was porous enough so could just grab bag and get chalk on fingers and palms

Result: Can only get a little bit of chalk on finger tips, not palms at all. Thinking this may be due to chalk inside, will update this review once ball is refilled with GSC Gym Chalk.

Trick: Figured the trick is to have the ball up-side-down in the bag so that a little bit of the chalk will trickle into the bag when the ball is moved so can grab ball and get plenty of chalk on finger tips to spread onto palm. Still a bit messy though and not quite as quick and easy as we hoped.

Update (12/07/2013): Very durable! Still using multiple times a week.

At first, not much chalk will come out. Give it some time and good use of squeezing it in your hands and soon enough it'll chalk you up very nicely. Very easy to refill too. I would buy the same one again if I lost mine. I don't think it'll wear down in a very long time since it's a pretty good material and not too thin.

I like it, but the chalk quality could be a bit better. I mainly bought it to refill the chalk anyways, so I guess that's not a huge deal. You kind of have to hit the ball against your hands rather than just squeezing it, though I would say that the amount of chalk delivered would increase over time as the ball starts to stretch out a bit. If that's not an issue for you, I say buy it.
