It is the year 2034.Beneath the ruins of post-apocalyptic Moscow, in the tunnels of the Metro, the remnants of mankind are besieged by deadly threats from outside - and within. Mutants stalk the catacombs beneath the desolate surface, and hunt amidst the poisoned skies above. But rather than stand united, the station-cities of the Metro are locked in a struggle for the ultimate power, a doomsday device from the military vaults of D6. A civil war is stirring that could wipe humanity from the face of the earth forever. As Artyom, burdened by guilt but driven by hope, you hold the key to our survival - the last light in our darkest hour. I pressed "E" when I was looking at a map on a wall, because I assumed the game would show me a close up view. Instead I ended up opening a door that I wasn't even facing. Then the game wouldn't let me go back to the previous room, because it had automatically saved a checkpoint that was updated to the new room, and some doors can only be passed through in one direction even though they are normal doors.
Unfortunately that meant I couldn't go back to the previous unexplored area.
I wanted to be able to go where I wanted and slaughter all of the bad guys, but the game wont let you. You have to follow the narrowly defined pathway.
Graphics are good as are the sound effects, and if that's all you need in a game then great.
But I get sick and tired of losing all my stuff that I've carefully collected -- by a scripted scene that can't be avoided. Being double crossed is also typical of this game, where they continually contrive unlikely situations to make it more difficult.
It's also annoying that you can't save the game -- only the automatic last checkpoint.
I always struggle to find sufficient gas masks.
There are also few times when you are able to buy a weapon and configure it, plus you are very limited on weapon types until late in the game.
Basically this is in my view pretty bad. If you can find it for under $20 then you might try it, but I'm annoyed I wasted my money. Basically it doesn't even rate when compared to the free ranging abilities of Fallout 3 or Skyrim, and many others.
Don't trust the reviews out there that rave about it. Sure there are people who love it, but any fair review will also talk about the very linear, scripted nature of the game.
Right off the top, if your looking for another bland FPS game, look elsewhere, they are a dime a dozen. If you like something more. This may be for you. If you prefer far cry over call of duty, this may be for you..
This at its surface is a First person shooter. Luckily it does not stop at its surface, it is deep and different.. in a good way. Can you run from area to area having fire fights? Absolutely. Combat is fun and well done. Or if you prefer a more realistic approach you can stick to the shadows and silently take down your enemys.
The combat is top notch. The story is a exceptional. The graphics are about as good as it gets (for a year ago). Overall on a 1-10 scale I would give this a SOLID 9..
The downside, this game will bring an average PC to its knees.

Running at 1080 resolution
My PC isnt top of the line, but it is no joke. It runs most games on ultra settings well over 100 frames per second. This game on maxed settings brought it down to 42 frames per second. It is no joke, this game will bring your system right back to reality.. in return you get some very pretty game play.. if your system can handle it and you enjoy first person shooter action in a deeper package, do yourself a favor and give this game a go. I LOVED it
The story line meshes well with the previous game - Metro 2033. Honestly I wish more games would back up their action with a good story like this game. Beware, this game is probably for 16 and older due to mature content. Overall, I like this game because it's like a perfect blend of visual effects like a movie and intense story like a good book. Highly recommend!
Would recommend ! Especilally if you liked the first one !
