I bought this for my small auto detailing business, mainly as a vacuum to use with the micro attachments they sell separately, in order to have something portable to clean the accessory areas of the vehicle, vents, between seats, etc., without having to lug a big vacuum around. UPS dropped off the package and I thought, "This can't possibly be the vacuum in here; it's too small of a box." No, the vacuum really is that small... like another reviewer said, "about as a big as a medium sized thermos." Don't let it's size fool you though, this little guy is just as powerful, if not better, than my shop vac. Details below.
*** BUILD QUALITY ***
I'm new to the "Metropolitan Vacuum" group of customers; never owned any of their products until just recently and boy am I impressed. I use their 8 HP dual motor, dual fan "Master Blaster" for drying vehicles in my shop and that thing is built like a tank. This think is build like a nice, sturdy, well... metal thermos! It looks industrial and you can see the quality when looking at it up close. One of the greatest things about it is it's made in the United States! I buy from Japan a lot because they have some products that are better than anywhere in the world, mostly electronics, but when it comes to goof old fashioned cleaning equipment like this, I try to stick with the "Made In U.S.A." label.
It's a simple design: Behind the cover where the hose goes in is a small bag, about the size of your fist. This is where the dirt and dust is collected. behind that is a steel plate with holes in it where the air is being sucked through by the 500 watt motor and fan behind it. Behind that is the back of the machine is a mesh-like opening where the air finally leaves the machine. Put your hand back there when the machine is running and you can feel the force this vacuum has, and that's after the air has passed through the hose, filtered bag, fan, motor, and out the back. Very impressive, and best of all, the motor comes with a 5-year warranty!
*** SOUND LEVEL ***
I wasn't very concerned about tho noise level as this is a shop and there are DA buffers I use that are louder than this thing. Honestly, besides having the distinctive "vacuum sound", it's relatively quiet for how powerful it is. You could easily vacuum with this out in your driveway at night and not get the neighbors mad.
*** HOW WELL DOES IT WORK? ***
Well, I've tested it on several cars now and it has picked up EVERYTHING debris wise that you'd find in a car that you can't pick up with your hands. It's the beginning of spring weather here in Ohio and so we're getting the cars in with rock salt on the carpets of the cars. I'm guilty of this myself on my brand new Civic Si because I was lazy and didn't get the Weatherbeater mats for the winter... now I have to steam clean the carpets to pull the salt out. Anyway, this thing is picking up fairly large sized pieces of rock salt like it's nothing which is very impressive.
I tried it with the mini attachments and again, was just blown away at its performance. It really is overkill for that sort of work but that's exactly why I bought it in the first place!
*** DOWNSIDES ***
The only downsides I've seen so far is the cost of the replacement bags. These bags are SMALL; about the size of a coffee filter, yet somehow cost over $2 each ($10.81 for a pack of 5.) I either need to find a cheaper brand that will fit in the machine, or, devise another way to cut costs in this area. I can't be changing new bags after every dirty customer car I vacuum.
*** CONCLUSION ***
My plan is to buy a couple more of these for the shop, AND try to find cheaper replacement bags. I've been able to just dump out the initial bag a couple times but after a couple uses, it really needs to be replaced or you put too much strain on the motor anf get less suction.
***If you have any questions about the machine, let me know in the comments section. I try to get back to people pretty quickly when it comes to questions. Thanks for taking the time to read the review and good luck on your search for a vacuum!***
they always cut off just before you finish with me rushing from side to side, front to back and want another dollar. Now I just take my time and do it right.
