Meural combines the best of art, tech, and design to create products that make us feel something. Our flagship product, the Meural Canvas, is a Wi-Fi-enabled digital canvas built to showcase artwork. Each frame gives you instant access to 20,000+ works of art and photography, and it’s easy to upload your own. We put control at your fingertips—use touch-free gesture control, our app, or website to browse and add new art. Our proprietary technology renders each image as lifelike and textured as a real painting, and the frame itself is authentic wood, painted black.
From the Manufacturer
There are three easy and intuitive ways to control the frame: 1) wave your hand across the sensor area at the bottom panel (in either landscape or portrait orientations), 2) use the Meural app, available in iOS and Android, 3) control with your own personal dashboard on my.meural.com.
With the Meural Canvas, seeing is believing. Featuring an anti-glare matte display with in-plane switching technology (IPS) to optimize color and viewing angle consistency, and software that recognizes the artwork’s original medium. A built-in ambient light sensor seamlessly adjusts the light of each image to match the room.
With each frame, you get instant access to 20,000 images, from artists past, present, and future. Covering classic works to contemporary and beyond, our collection was crafted to spark discovery and expression.
Every frame is built from natural wood with an interior mat board to evoke a gallery setting. It’s just another way the Meural Canvas augments any interior.
The Meural Canvas is versatile—it’s simple and easy to change orientations. (The are two sensors, so gesture control works in either alignment.)
Meural combines the best of art, technology, and design to create products that make us feel something. It's our goal to make art universally accessible, and a part of people's daily lives.
Describe your product in 3 words.
Digital connected canvases.
How did you come up with the idea for this product?
Meural started from a very basic premise: we should all be able to change the art on our walls—whenever we want. Digital frames aren’t a new concept, but no one had created one that truly reproduces the experience of art. We spent countless hours with artists, designers, and developers, and have built a product that exceeds all expectations.
What makes your product special?
Most people who walk by the Meural Canvas assume it’s a real painting, and don’t think twice. But the product is nothing if not for art it showcases. We’ve carefully crafted a collection of art and photography meant to provoke experts and novices alike. The frame also empowers the user, giving them the ability to curate our library, or add their own images.
What has been the best part of your startup experience?
We live for the notes we get from happy customers—and they’re forwarded around the office without delay. To know we’ve made someone’s life more artful, or given them the platform to showcase their best photography, or introduced them to a new artist (or artwork, or movement), is why we do what we do.

One of the best things about Meural is the gesture interface. It takes a few minutes to get used to but once you get the hang of it, it's addicting. I love being able to change which collection is being displayed without getting out my phone.
We ultimately bought Meural because of their art and photo collections (you can see them at [...]. You can upload your own art or photos but Meural has more than enough free collections to keep us entertained. Each "collection" you download is like a small playlist of photos that changes every 30 minutes (you can change this in the settings). It keeps things feeling new without making it distracting. Overall we've been super happy with the purchase.
* Looks really nice
* You load art through the website in sets of "collections" - it's a pretty easy process, and as of now, all the collections are free
* You can switch art on-demand by using the phone app or with gesture controls when standing in front of the frame
* You can also put the art on auto-rotate so it switches every so often
* There's no way to auto-rotate only among a sub-set of images in a collection. For example, I really like Eleanor Lutz's collection on Meural, but there's no way to auto-rotate only among the animated images of that collection. Also if there's a collection you really like, but don't like one image in the collection, well then you can't edit the collection on your device to skip that one.
* Many images fail to load (blank screen) when navigating to them. If you leave the Meural for a while, then the same images sometimes load and sometimes don't (requiring a restart). You'd think they'd have optimized all the collections on their site...
I'm hoping Meural fixes both these issues with software updates, as otherwise, this is an excellent device (nothing else quite like it).
The website and the tech in the canvas were a little clunky at first, but recent updates have everything working much more seamless. I still have some occasional problems getting the app to connect to the canvas, but I have never had connection difficulties from the main website. It was extremely simple to set up, and the only issues I ran into were where to hang it in the house and whether to hang it horizontal or vertical!
The versatility is exceptional. You can display paintings, photographs, or video (no sound). Besides selecting from the thousands of works of art on Meural's website, you can also easily upload your own photos/videos. You can schedule them to appear in any order (including random) you want, change the image duration, set it to turn on and off at certain times, or even have it turn and and off in response to ambient light. Like any monitor/screen, you can adjust brightness, image fill, border colors, etc.
My initial hesitation was the price, as you can get other large digital frames much cheaper. Like many things, however, you get what you pay for. Most professional reviews put the image quality of the Meural much higher than other products, and I would be surprised if there is anything that matches it. Furthermore, I doubt the others are as simple to use or have the vast selection of art available for download. The way I think about it, if you buy a decent reproduction of a work of art, especially with the frame, it's going to cost you at least $200-300 (and thousands for very nice ones). For the price of 2-3 static pieces of art, you can have thousands on a single frame. Tastes change over time, and some paintings/photos that I was enamored with 8 months ago now are not in the rotation. With a regular painting, I would have been stuck with it.
Finally, the customer service has been outstanding. My first canvas has worked flawlessly, but my second one had been a little buggy for the first month or two. Recently, it started freezing up. Meural paid the shipping to have it sent back, and they tried to fix it. The fix only worked temporarily, so now they are sending me a new one. I have been dealing with Joanna, and she is awesome. She always gets back to me quickly (even on a Saturday), is very nice, and focuses on what we can do to minimize my annoyance. Excellent customer service can be hard to find, but Meural has it (and that was what lead me to write this review).
As others have echoed, it is a fantastic product and you will not regret the purchase.
P.S. I may sound a little over the top, but I have not received a discount or other benefit for my review - I paid full price for both canvases. I actually waited to see how they handled my recent technical issues before writing this. I just think they are a great company with a great product and I want them to succeed.
