Mexifornia: A State of Becoming Second Edition, Kindle Edition

4.7 4.7 out of 5 stars 436 ratings

Victor Davis Hanson locates the cause of our immigration quagmire in the opportunistic coalition that stymies immigration reform and, even worse, stifles any honest discussion of the present crisis. Conservative corporations, contractors and agribusiness demand cheap wage labor from Mexico, whatever the social consequences. Meanwhile, “progressive” academics, journalists, government bureaucrats and La Raza advocates see illegal aliens as a vast new political constituency for those peddling the notion that victimhood, not citizenship, is the key to advancement. The troubles Hanson identifies may have reached critical mass in California, but they also affect Americans who inhabit “Mexizona,” “Mexichusetts” and other states of becoming.

Hanson follows the fortunes of Hispanic friends he has known all his life—how they have succeeded in America and how they regard the immigration quandary. But if
Mexifornia is an emotionally generous look at the ambition and vigor of people who have made California strong, it is also an indictment of the policies that got California into its present mess. In the end, Hanson is hopeful that our traditions of assimilation, integration and intermarriage may yet remedy a predicament that the politicians and ideologues have allowed to get out of hand.

Review

"In an atmosphere rife with so much hypocrisy, Mr. Hanson's outspoken book is quite a breath of fresh air."

MEXIFORNIA
A State of Becoming

VICTOR DAVIS HANSON

Review by Roy Murry, Author

Closed or open borders on the southern frontier of the USA is the central question of Mr. Hanson's thesis. He gives the reader the full spectrum of pros and cons to contemplate in his description of the state of California the way he sees it as a native farmer and professor of history.

The complexities of the Mexican illegal immigration that California seems to be the epicenter may spread across the country if the governments on each side of the divide do not pay attention to the reasons for that migration. The movements of that migration must be either stopped or opened is the question the USA Congress and the American people must decide - walls or no walls.

MEXIFORNIA is a piece of excellent background information as to what has happened since the 1970s to the present situation. Latins, illegal or not, are the backbone of the farming industry in that state.

According to the author, his and thousands of Californians’ lives have changed with the constant flow of young migrants replacing older ones, working on the farms and hard labor. Many of them have not acquired the abilities to assimilate to become citizens or speak the English language.

This situation has changed the economic landscape, much for the worst, and could spread throughout the USA.

If the USA immigration at our Southern border is of interest to you, MEXIFORNIA is an intelligent read to start your quest of understanding illegal immigration.

The Author of Mexifornia is first, a clear and wonderful writer. He is a born and bred Californian who lives in the house his immigrant great grandmother built. They were immigrants from Sweden. The guy has no political motivation just an honest assessment of the situation from someone who grew up in the midst of a Hispanic community in the '60s and is very qualified to discuss the issue facing the state and nation. I couldn't say enough about this book. Very balanced, very first person is descriptive as to how things have changed and why. Wish out arrogant, self-serving and humble and proud of it politicians would read it. They would learn some things that are very important before it is too late.

I thought it was going to be a straight denunciation of illegal immigration, but it isn't. Hanson is a classicist at Cal State and also owns a vineyard in the central agricultural region. He has dealt with people on all sides of the debate, including the academics he works with and the Mexican immigrants who do the work on his farm that no one else will do. He also has to deal with the other immigrants who steal from him or drive drunk and crash cars in his front yard. No one ends up looking good in this book. The first-person observation is sharp, fair, and to me, irrefutable.

The book was most interesting. Having been written in 2003, your could compare the school system then and now! Much has changed in how the immigrate children were educated then and now! The author composed a very good book. I would recommend the book.

I loved this book, most likely because it mirrored what I saw happen in CA during the 1980's, 90's and the 21st century. Dr Hanson just true to say what he saw happen. I am a life time Democrat, served with Hispanics in the Marine Corps and my 25 years as a COP. Great people. Great workers in general, good humor, religious, and fun loving. The problem is not with Hispanic people. The problem is the mass migration with nothing set up to "Americanize" the new comers. I live 400 miles north of the Mexican border. By the year 1992 our county jails had 42% Mexican nationals in Custody. Now we currently have about 33% of the former native people of El Salador, 25% of the former people of Honduras and at least 15% of former Mexican nationals have moved to the USA. This mass migration was not planned for. The vast majority of the millions of people had little or no formal education. Just like our jails, our schools were over whelmed. Housing was also overwhelmed. Our county was over run with Mexican National and Salvadoran gangs. The vast majority of Mexican Nationals who moved here were from the Mexican Sate of Michoacan which is rated as a no travel zone for USA citizens because of wide spread violence-homicides, kidnapping, car jacking, and robbery. Our current basic cable has 12 Spanish language channels. In two decades we went though a revolution. Many places in the county English is rarely heard.
There is little need to learn English. All government services have tax payer translators. All our leaders seem to do is ignore the problems of a two language society and usually accuse anyone who talks about it as being racist. That is what Dr Hanson talks about in great detail-change as seen through his eyes. Drastic change needs careful planning we have had none here in CA.

Excellent insight from farm owner and labor point of view. Good analysis of Mexican labor motivation for coming to USA for work and their personal issues working in a foreign country for $ 10/hour.

In addition, a personal analysis of the impact of the large numbers of Mexican laborers coming into the CA central valley and the resulting changes in the living style and standards for both the residents and the new arrivals. The author owns and operates a working farm that has been in family for over 100 years. He is living through the situation he is writing about.
