Note: The unit I received was an early unit which came with a USB-based cord along with a car 12 volt adapter. It appears that the unit now comes with a standard dc adapter. No matter, the charging by the unit will still function in the same manner, that is to say, efficiently and effortlessly by the user. If you're looking for a smaller, economically-priced, yet powerful charger, you can't go wrong with the C2-3000 model. In fact, even though I have several other chargers, it's the one I reach for first.
In the box: The C2-3000 comes with a proprietary USB power cord with a barrel connector that connects to the charger, a “CC-24” USB 6-12V DC cigarette lighter socket adapter for car charging and a English language instruction booklet. No USB wall wart is provided (2 Amps minimum USB power source is recommended by Miboxer).
The C2-3000 appears to be very nicely made with smooth working stainless sliders and is reported to be constructed from flame retardant materials.
The “CC-24” car charger is designed to deliver 5V when using ordinary USB cords (red indicator light) or 12V when using the MiBoxer “smart” USB line (green indicator light). When running on 12V from the car charger the C2-3000 can charge Li-Ions at up to 1.5A per slot vs 1 Amp when using a 5V USB power source (NiHM/NICds are limited to 1A from either Voltage).
Display: the C2-3000 has pale blue back lit 20x53 mm (0.79x2.1 inch) LCD screen display (lighter blue and easier to read than the C4's dark blue back light). Information displays includes approximate percentage charge of both cells, approximate remaining charge time, mAh charged and real time Voltage, charge current and internal resistance (each displayed alternately for 2 seconds each) for the slot selected. A SLOT button toggles between the display for the 2 cells charging. The SLOT button is kind of small and of the same black color as the rest of the charger making it a bit hard to see in low light. The SLOT button will turn off the back light if pressed and held for about a second. When on, the back light slowly dims and turns off after several minutes; pressing the SLOT button again will turn the back light back on.
The SLOT button does not allow changing the charge current or Voltage to be selected; the C2 automatically sets these and does not provide for manual override by the user.
Charging: Put the cells in and the C2-3000 does the rest – about as simple as it gets! The C2 determines if the cell is a Li-Ion or a NiMH/NiCd and analyzes the cell's internal resistance, state of charge and calculates it's approximate capacity which are used to set the charge current and Voltage as well as allowing the approximate charge time remaining to be calculated and displayed. Care should be taken to ensure that only proper Li-Ion or NiMH/NiCad are charged – LiPO4's are not supported.
At first I was a little leery of the C2-3000's ability to set the right charge rate, but it always seemed to work as it should; charging lower capacity and old worn out cells with high internal resistance at slow rates and healthy higher capacity cells at higher rates without either the cells or charger getting hot (cells only got slightly warm at most at the end of the charge). Unlike the C4, the C2-3000 does not apply a trickle charge after the main charge cycle is complete.
Charge rates are up to 1 Amp for NiMH/NiCd and Li-Ions using a 2 Amp wall wart and 1.5 Amp for Li-Ions using the car charger adapter. The C2-3000 uses negative delta V for charge termination for NiMH/NiCds.
The C2-3000 remembers the charging curves for the last 2 Li-Ion cells charged uses this to try to match up with the next Li-Ion cell charged to improve the accuracy of the capacity and remaining charge time estimates.
I found these estimates to be inaccurate during the first few minutes of charging but after about 20 min. of charging they seem to settle down and become more accurate (though they are still fairly rough estimates).
Internal Resistance Measurement: The C2-3000 gives real time internal resistance (in milli-Ohms) through out the charge cycle. The C2-3000 seems to be more accurate an consistent than the C4, probably due to the redesigned sliders that appear to make better contact with less play on the C2-3000. There is still some variation when the same cell is tested repeatedly and the 2 slots don't always agree when the same cell is tested. Internal resistance generally goes down and gets more consistent at the end of the charge cycle.
Lithium battery restoration: Like the C4, the C2-3000 has a feature that automatically attempts to restore over discharged Li-Ion cells. I didn't have such a cell available, so I didn't try this feature.
Reverse polarity protection: If a battery is put in backwards, the C2-3000 will detect it, stop charging and give an “ERR” message. Although I did not test it, the C2-3000 is designed to do the same with a short circuit/damaged cell.
I found that, like the C4, the C2-3000 will not detect alkaline cells and will attempt to charge them - you need to be careful that all of the cells that you only try to charge proper rechargeable cells!
3 year Warranty: 15 day replacement through the dealer if DOA, 3 year/ 36 month free repair through Miboxer; beyond that only labor is covered, exclusive of any parts needed for repair.
Bottom line: The C2-3000 seems to be a good charger for someone looking for simplicity, ease of use and is only interested in charging 1.2V NiMH/NiCds and 3.6/3.7V Li-Ions. Since just about everything is automatic, the C2-3000 can be used by family members or anyone who may not all that knowledgeable on charge currents and Voltages without worry of using the wrong setting. On the other hand, the C2-3000's simplicity means that it may not be a charger that will satisfy a tinkerer or hobbyist as there are no manual settings or support for LiPO4's or charging at 4.35 Volts.
Suggested Improvements: Personally, I would prefer a plug in power cord like on the C4 rather than USB charging of the C2-3000, or at least the inclusion of a good 2+ Amp USB wart. The USB to barrel connector plug works fine, but I wonder if it might be difficult to find a replacement if it gets damaged or lost – without this specialized cord the C2-3000 can not be used as it is needed for both USB and car charging.
I would also like to see the C2-3000 modified to reject non-rechargeable (primary) cells and others with high internal resistance to make it safer and more foolproof.
And a yellow SLOT button, like on the C4, would be easier to see in low light.
