I bought the AD250 DAC/amp along with the Micca MB42X bookshelf speakers and the Dayton SUB-800 subwoofer to replace LSR305 in a desktop setup. The main reason why I replaced the LSR305 was because I couldn't stand its static noise blasting at my face 24/7. AD250+MB42X put out much less static noise when there's nothing playing. I have to put my ear within 6 inches of the speaker to hear any noise, which would never happen in normal use, whereas I could hear the LSR305 noise from 2 or 3 feet away.
I also looked at a bunch of other amps including the Lepai LP-2020A+, the SMSL SA36A, and the Dayton DTA-120, but ultimately I chose Micca simply because of their reputation on the MB42X. I can't comment on the sound quality as this is my first real setup and I'm just a casual listener, but so far I haven't had any major issues. However, there are a few minor issues that can be annoying.
1. Power on/off click and pop noise. See my video for this. This is a very common problem in audio amplifiers and especially speaker drivers. If you do a quick search on "TPA3116D2 power on pop", you will see loads of people having the same problem with this chip. I'm not familiar with this chip so I can't say for sure, but usually the problem can be avoided by careful system design. This is not a deal breaker, but at $100, Micca should do better than this.
2. Sound is unbalanced at low volume. The right speaker is clearly at a higher volume than the left speaker. Again, this is not a deal breaker because no one would listen at such low volume, but it can create an illusion that the right speaker is louder when you first power on the speakers.
3. When using the optical input, lowering volume to 10-20% on Windows can sometimes create loud, short bursts of static noise. I've never had this problem when using my old Orei DA21. Again probably not a showstopper, as most people would maximize the source volume and adjust the volume with the amp knob to maximize signal integrity, but this could be a minor inconvenience for people who don't have the amp at arm's reach.
Overall I'm still happy with the purchase, but it would be great if Micca can iron out these issues in the next version.
