John Steinbecks classic comes magnificently to life in this beautiful and stirring film starring Oscar® nominees* John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. Directed by Sinise from an adaptation by Oscar® winner** Horton Foote, this "flawless miracle of movie-making" (Susan Granger, "American Movie Classics") is a must-see for all audiences. Best friends Lennie (Malkovich) and George (Sinise) find themselves unemployed in Depression-era California, unable to keep jobs because of Lennies childlike mentality. But once they get hired at the Tyler Ranch, they enjoy a brief period of stability until their supervisors wife (Sherilyn Fenn) becomes the victim of Lennies compassion, forcing George to make a compassionate decision of his own.

The Story lines goes, there are two friends, one taking care of the other. Each friend has he's faults and strengths so to speak. They Compliment each other to be honest, what George doesn't do so well, Lennie makes up for it. George seems misunderstood, and Lennie has his own way about things. I love the way the actors brought the story to the screen, they fit perfectly for each roll that was played. In my head reading this story I pictured things a certain way, and watching them come to live in front of me was simply amazing.
The emotions from this movie are a bit overwhelming at times, I felt sorry for George, then I would feel sorry for Lennie. I was back and forth over that, because on one you have a man who just wants to live a normal life for once, someone who goes to work, and comes home, and lives life. On the other hand he has George, who can't really function outside of the rules set before him. He tries, but bless his heart he just can't be by himself. The story moves on to The Ranch owner's Son and his wife, from there watching all of it play out. I was so in to the movie, I actually forgot I put popcorn in the microwave, and finished the rest of the movie without even moving an inch.
Excellent Movie and Actors, I really enjoyed this Movie. Two BIG Thumbs Up Here!!
Anyone who has really loved Gary Sinise's perfect version of this Steinbeck classic, I strongly recommend this disc.
Although Curly's Wife is depicted a bit sweeter in the movie than the book, and the beginning starts with "showing" what happened in the town of Weed (it was briefly explained in the book), the movie is 99.9% true to the story.
If you are not a teacher and want to see the movie for your personal interest, the acting is superb. You will not be disappointed!
Great adaption of the book and redo of the old movie!
