Play as cunning field mice who must race through a castle now twenty times larger than before. The castle would be a dangerous place with Vanestra's minions in control but now countless other terrors also await heroes who are but the size of figs. Play as nimble Prince Colin and fence your way past your foes or try Nez Bellows the burly smith. Confound your foes as the wizened old mouse Maginos or protect your companions as Tilda the castle's former healer. Every player will have a vital role in the quest to warn the king and it will take careful planning to find Vanestra's weakness and defeat her. Mice and Mystics is a cooperative adventure game in which the players work together to save an imperiled kingdom. They will face countless adversaries such as rats cockroaches and spiders and of course the greatest of all horrors: the castle's housecat Brodie. Mice and Mystics is a boldly innovative game that thrusts players into an ever changing interactive environment and features a rich storyline that the players help create as they play the game. ONCE UPON A TIME In the kingdom of Owendale there lived a kind, but lonely, king who had no queen to help him rule the country or raise his son, Prince Collin. One autumn day an emissary arrived at the castle - the mysterious and beautiful Queen Vanestra. Before long, the King announced his intentions to marry Vanestra. And then the dark days came. It is both. This is a great game for college students or high school students looking for a weekend activity.
The game is too complicated for younger crowd despite the cute illustrations and the fact that the game involves playing mice.
(If you want to play an RPG with the 6-10 crowd, try Mouse Guard. It is both simple and fun and works well with the younger gamers.)
This lavishly illustrated board game comes with a beautifully designed, double sided set of tiles. There are over a dozen miniatures that come with the game, and the specialty dice and the four color printed glossy manual and story book round out the high quality components.
The game is played using a basic set of rules about placement of minions (opponents) and how to conduct actions by the players.
Each game consists of a number of scenes/chapters that are described in the story book.
The players take on the role of humans that have voluntarily become mice to escape from the castle where an evil sorceress has taken over.
The game is quite complicated, but there are an excellent set of on-line videos that teach you how to play.
All in all, this is a great change of pace game for the college and high school crowd, but older gamers battling job and family obligations might not have the time to invest that is needed to learn the game.
The miniatures are very detailed. So much so that people detail paint them. The only downside with the figures is that they are a soft, bendable plastic. For painting I prefer a harder plastic.
Another downside is the inside of the box. The box begs for a molded inside piece for the various components. But what's inside? The same lame cardboard divider (that I threw into the trash) that's inside the Summoner Wars game box. Exact the same! And, it does NOT work for either game! So many games get this aspect right. There are compartments for the different sized cards, for the miniatures, for the dice, etc. It's not brain surgery to design and produce, so I'm thinking is that Plaid Hat is simply skimping. I never understand why companies do almost every aspect great and cut corners on some things. Why not have high standards with every aspect? Why not quality from top to bottom?
If I could give the game 4.5 stars I would. Because of the soft plastic and lame inside. But, the game gets 5 stars instead of 4, because the rest of the game is awesome. The best part is the story. The RPG aspect is nothing new and most any game manufacturer can develop simply RPG rules and components. But, the story line of this game is a rarity and very well done.
Also, this is NOT a hard core RPG game, but enjoyable none the less.
The game's website has a 25min video you can watch that explains the rules in a nutshell. This is a nice feature for getting new players up to speed at the same time. When friends come over, everyone can watch the video at the same time instead of taking turns reading the instructions. It helps explain the basic play, but after playing it 5 times, I still need to refer to the instruction book several times during a game.
The story is fun and cute. My fiance is not interested in the military or conquering themes that many board games of this caliber promote. Overall, the game is fun, but it does not have very much interaction between players. You all work together to beat the board game, but that is mostly decided by rolling dice and not by talking to each other. For that reason, my fiance and I give it 4 stars. She likes games with lots of player interaction better (like Munchkin). There are also a lot of rules that you have to remember and keep track of to play this game. Each chapter has special rules too. This adds to replay value, but also makes it challenging for those who are not used to this type of game to learn. If you have played a game like this already then it should be easier to learn. If you are new to this type of game, just stay diligent. Once you learn this one, the next one will be easier.
