We bought this because we were looking for a game similar to descent but without the need for an overlord. My husband and I like to play games together and this one is perfect because we can each control 2 mice without having a separate player as a bad guy. Or at least that was the plan... but when my 6 year old daughter saw the mice figures she immediately wanted to play. So right now she plays 1, I play 1 and my husband plays 2 and we are all enjoying this game immensely!

This game has incredible atmosphere, with a full story book to walk you through (each scenario is called a "chapter"). Basically you are (former-human) mice exploring a castle and battling rats, spiders, centipedes, etc, even the castle cat Brodie.

Each chapter is a rescue mission or spy mission, etc with story points along the way that you read. Each mouse has different equipment and abilities and each room has different rooms that have different rules making it seem very thematic.

If you're not a good rule reader you can check out the publisher's web site for an instructional video. This is a great game for a group of friends or even for kids if an adult helps them along. *****

Purchased this game after reading reviews on lots of games on boardgamegeek.com. Wanted something that my fiance and I could play just the two of us but that could also accommodate more players (up to 4) if we had friends over. There are always 4 characters playing the game. So if only two people can play, then each plays as two characters instead of one. We often play with 3 people so one person plays as two characters.

The game's website has a 25min video you can watch that explains the rules in a nutshell. This is a nice feature for getting new players up to speed at the same time. When friends come over, everyone can watch the video at the same time instead of taking turns reading the instructions. It helps explain the basic play, but after playing it 5 times, I still need to refer to the instruction book several times during a game.

The story is fun and cute. My fiance is not interested in the military or conquering themes that many board games of this caliber promote. Overall, the game is fun, but it does not have very much interaction between players. You all work together to beat the board game, but that is mostly decided by rolling dice and not by talking to each other. For that reason, my fiance and I give it 4 stars. She likes games with lots of player interaction better (like Munchkin). There are also a lot of rules that you have to remember and keep track of to play this game. Each chapter has special rules too. This adds to replay value, but also makes it challenging for those who are not used to this type of game to learn. If you have played a game like this already then it should be easier to learn. If you are new to this type of game, just stay diligent. Once you learn this one, the next one will be easier.

The game is probably described in detail in other reviews, so I won't do that. Also, there are videos on-line where you can see a play through of the first chapter. That's what prompted me to buy the game, and glad that I did.

The miniatures are very detailed. So much so that people detail paint them. The only downside with the figures is that they are a soft, bendable plastic. For painting I prefer a harder plastic.

Another downside is the inside of the box. The box begs for a molded inside piece for the various components. But what's inside? The same lame cardboard divider (that I threw into the trash) that's inside the Summoner Wars game box. Exact the same! And, it does NOT work for either game! So many games get this aspect right. There are compartments for the different sized cards, for the miniatures, for the dice, etc. It's not brain surgery to design and produce, so I'm thinking is that Plaid Hat is simply skimping. I never understand why companies do almost every aspect great and cut corners on some things. Why not have high standards with every aspect? Why not quality from top to bottom?

If I could give the game 4.5 stars I would. Because of the soft plastic and lame inside. But, the game gets 5 stars instead of 4, because the rest of the game is awesome. The best part is the story. The RPG aspect is nothing new and most any game manufacturer can develop simply RPG rules and components. But, the story line of this game is a rarity and very well done.

Also, this is NOT a hard core RPG game, but enjoyable none the less.

Let me just start by saying this is a co-op game so it is the players vs. the game

This game feels more like you're playing a story as opposed to playing a board game. This may appeal to some but I'm on the fence about it. I've played this game three times so far and I found myself in between plays being more interested in what is going to happen next in the story as opposed to enjoying a fun game with great mechanics.

This game is also extremelly luck based. Dice determine everything in this game. Such as: attacks, defending, searching, getting out of water, generating cheese. Some people may not mind all the luck but for me I enjoy having my descisions more directly affect gameplay. It felt like we could play this game the exact same way and do the exact same thing and we would win half the time and lose half the time.

Let me explain some of the game mechanics or at least the parts that include the dice. Now all five dice are exactly the same. On each of the dice there is one sword symbol, two sword and shield symbols, two bow and arrow, and one cheese symbol. In melee combat for each sword you roll it is one hit. In ranged combat for each bow and arrow you roll it is one hit. After the attacker rolls the defender rolls defense and for each shield rolled one hit is blocked. Most of the heroes in this game only have 3 life so if you have some bad luck (which seemed to happen to me a lot) your hero could end up loosing 2 life from a single basic minion.

So one of the sides of the dice is cheese. Whenever a hero rolls cheese when attacking or defending they gain a cheese token which they can use to activate their abilities. Whenever a minion rolls a cheese when attacking or defending they add a cheese token to the minion cheese wheel.
