I've been a fan of both Michael Bay and The Bitter Script Reader for years and this book perfectly captures why. It's well researched, well argued and extremely fun. It can be easy to dismiss Michael Bay as just hack. A man-child making movies for other man-children. But, the reality is that you can't be as successful as Bay has been without talent, drive and the ability to tap into a mass audience that wants what you're selling. The BSR does a great job of explaining what is that Bay does so well, how his movies are then just "blowing stuff really pretty" and how many of his movies have a subversive quality to them you've probably never noticed. If you are a fan of cinema you owe it to yourself to read this great book.

Quite a different slant on the explosion-happy narratives generated by Michael Bay. I follow the blog and Twitter notes of The Bitter Script Reader. Always incisive and succinct, he suggests Bay's body of work deserves more respect and a second/third look. For film fans, it is a must-read for re-examining commercially successful cinema in light of subtext, subtleties (and not so subtle) aspects of Bay's story arcs.

Given TBSR's penchant for irony, at times I did wonder if I were not actually reading a send-up. Even so, his examination of the Bay corpus was vastly enjoyable and added to my established affection for Bay's body of work.

Wow, so you're a script reader? Certainly explains how Hollywood is now nothing but one big s*** factory. And if you're bitter maybe it's because those scripts have too many big words for you... Something you never have to worry about with the genius' films which are pretty much dumbed down cartoons with explosions for idiots and frat bro humor (Gays are funny! Minorities are stupid, he he he!)

Now you might wanna get that hit to the head you took awhile back looked at. And stop eating that red stuff coming out of your ears. For the last time it's not Jello.

This book is hysterical. If you're looking for an entertaining film analysis of Michael Bay, this is the definitive take. I'm not sure of the author is dead serious or just messing with us. Either way, I really don't care. It's a fun read, and that's all that really matters. Just as Michael Bay's movies don't ask us to take them seriously, neither should we with this book.
