Format: Paperback
The late Mel Gussow spent an enormous amount of time getting to know the great Michael Gambon, and the result is a fascinating, thrilling book of interviews with a fascinating actor who speaks his mind about his work and the craft of acting. If you are looking for titilating details about this actor's personal life, this is not the book for you, as he is intensely private on that front. But if your interest in him is his career primarily on the stage, this book will fulfill your every expectation as he speaks deliciously about life in the theatre. My only regret is that the book ended much much too soon.

One of my very favorite books. I learned a lot about theater and could hear Gambon's voice as I was reading the interviews. Absolutely marvelous.

One would expect all kinds of insights regarding acting from someone as accomplished as Gambon. Regrettably, most of this book deals with trivia and gossip relating to Gambon's hobby (gun collecting and restoration) as well as the import he places on having a parking space near the theatre in which he performs. As for acting, it is, for him, basically a form of showing off (the claim is repeated at least three times). Sometimes personal anacdotes disclose much about the person and the deeper dimensions of their world. This is not the case here.
