I got a shock when Chris' book arrived from Amazon. It's a HUGE volume - at least compared to the others I have by him (in association with Craig Halstead) namely Michael Jackson For the Record and Michael Jackson The Solo Years.

And this is only Volume One: A-J !!!

On first perusal I found the layout confusing because of the many images (some of them stretched or squeezed out of their correct ratios) for which its sometimes difficult to track down the supporting reference in the text.

The design is in keeping with the other aforementioned books, but it seems to me that a different style of lay-out and less of the barely relevant or poorly reproduced or proportioned images would have helped the look and readability of The Maestro.

The alphabetically arranged entries are, however, informative and have obviously been updated from Chris' previous titles as more information about Michael's life, career and musical output has come to light since his untimely passing.

There are some obscure (at least to me) gems, which the reader is only likely to come across when looking for something else - or by reading the book from cover to cover. For example, "Johnny Appleseed Story" is one entry, based on reports in 1986 that MJ was set to star in a film about the pioneering legend who planted apple trees across the United States. Apparently Michael wanted Steven Spielberg to star."

While we, as fans, lament all the ideas, schemes and dreams Michael talked of (or that were attributed to him) we will probably never know for sure which of these many stories has any basis in truth. Some reference to a source might give us an idea, but without that, such an item is merely 'curious'.

First and foremost, this book is extremely thick-like a dictionary. There were some minor errors, but nothing major. The author did a very good job compiling the information on MJ.

I was very disappointed that there were no color photographs in the book, only black and white.

There is nothing out there in the Market like this compilation regarding Michael Jackson. This book “First Volume Edition” compiles all the information like a Dictionary from A to J. There is a lot of information regarding not just the released songs but songs that remain unreleased and still remain in the vault. There are also a lot of projects that Michael worked on unknown to the general public besides other visionary business ventures that in the last years took flight like he himself envision. Furthermore, it also contains interviews and his most daring speeches where he open up to the public like he never did before in Carnegie Hall in New York and Oxford University in London back in 2001, even more then he did in the Oprah Winfrey Show back in 1993. This book sources which are many by the way, has a lot of information from that actual people that work with Michael Jackson thru out his entire career. For the first time we get to read how this man work behind the scene, reconfirming what was seen in films for his TOURS, Albums and Special Presentations. This is an INSIDE LOOK of his artistry like a huge puzzle but each piece has a description for it. We often think we know him but you will be surprise by going thru this book that we actually didn’t know how much he care about his craft and also how much he care about his environment, youth, humanity as a whole just like his artistic expression. Towards the end of the book there is a list of links to other websites which contains footage, photos and other interesting galleries for further exploration. I personally was not looking for photos since I do have already books and magazines full of them. I was very interested about all this great compilation of information because I really wanted to know the lengths he will go to develop and invest himself as an artist. Best, G
