About Michael R. Martin
Michael R. Martin (1960-) was born in Sacramento, CA and spent his early years tracking around the country with his Air Force father, including a few years in Iran, eventually settling near family roots in Gilmanton, NH in 1971. Michael is an environmental scientist by vocation.
Michael was raised Roman Catholic. His faith journey began when he accepted Christ at a Baptist summer youth camp. Although he spent many years unassociated with organized religion, he jumped in deep when he joined the United Methodist Church in 1996. Michael soon joined the praise band, became active in church leadership, attended a Walk to Emmaus weekend, became a Certified Lay Speaker and immersed himself in Christian study. Along the way, he became the minister for the Sunday Praise Service, selecting the music and order of worship, leading the music with voice and guitar, and sharing preaching duties with the pastor and several other church members.
Michael's hobbies include music, photography, and reading.

Blog postBladderwort (Utricularia spp.) is a relatively common carnivorous aquatic plant found in many lakes, ponds and wetlands. The small bladders along the stem that give the plant its name capture and digest zooplankton much like a pitcher plant catches an insect. Except it is a more active capture as a passing zooplankter triggers the trap door on the bladder and the vacuum within sucks in the microscopic animal.
Here is that process in slow motion, as a copepod triggers that reaction and5 months ago Read more -

Blog postI’ve often struggled with the native/nonnative/invasive dividing line when it comes to plants. For instance, so many of what we call roadside wild flowers are “escapes” from the 1800s. Well, now with climate change the line is about to become blurrier. Adaptation is what plants and animals do. This article discusses climate driven range shifts that plant species will be experiencing in the context of invasive species. Some of what is said in the article might be a bit radical. But, in the end12 months ago Read more

Blog postTrees sway in a clear breeze stripped of its humidity by the passing cold front.
The rains lift, the clouds part, and the sun spreads a golden glow.
Moisture, like tiny prisms, colorful sparkles on pine boughs.

Blog postIt is a cold November day.
The bare trees are cracking like an old man’s bones.
Flakes of snow drift lazily up, and down, and sideways
Floating on breezes, though gentle, yet burn the skin.
Occasional shafts of dim sunlight lance between fast moving clouds
Streaming across a pale sky that only hints of blue.
The dog looks up at me, wondering.
And I agree.
Yes, it is time to go back inside.3 years ago Read more -
Blog postThe first day of the new year didn't so much dawn as it oozed into existence, the heavy cloud cover preventing anything remotely resembling a sunrise. A nearly invisible snow was falling, so fine that 24 hours of snowfall has yet to yield more than a dusting on the ground. Even the motionless trees, bare tangles of branches against the featureless sky, showed no sign of putting on a hint of sparkle for winter, for the new day, or the new year. In spite of all this, the dog stuck her cold, we5 years ago Read more

Blog postIt's a weird thing being a me
Wrapped up in this squishy body,
Looking out at the world.
It's interesting that the best times we have
Are those that take us out of ourselves,
Outside of the Me.
It leads me to believe that somewhere, outside of me,
Is a universe of life and love.
And the more we can experience here, in life,
Outside of me,
Brings us closer to the universal Us where we belong.

Blog postThe sound of the wind, blowing through bare trees
Takes me back to Gilmanton.
I see the memory now, as an observer:
A small wooden table in Nana's garage,
Painted white and pastels, handcrafted by Grampy.
We sit, two small children, in tall chairs, feet swinging.
My sister, Thia, across the table,
Bowl-cut blond hair and happy concentration,
Coloring with crayons on large sheets of paper.

"Before long, I realized that Michael was transmitting God’s desire to be God With Us in his poetry. Michael was being led to a whole different level of Christian writing. He was literally transcribing messages from the Holy Spirit as have other mystics through the ages. There have been moments when I read one of Michael’s poems that my eyes sting and my body burns; my heart lays heavy with a grief for being away from heaven. I “get the power” of Michael’s words, but I can’t hold onto them. They aren’t so easily absorbed and categorized into my thought process. I have to sit as he has with the idea that my soul needs to be in communication with God and that communication is not so easy to come by. It takes practice. It takes commitment. It takes desire to say as Saint Francis did “My God and my all.”"
