- MaxTouch Construction combined with the interlocking action of Michelin's Breakthrough IntelliSipe technology delivers impressively long wear life by providing exceptional tread block rigidity while optimizing the tire's contact with the road during acceleration, braking and cornering.
- Exceptional grip provided by IntelliSipe Technology maximizes the number of sipes within the tire, which allows you to brake confidently when you need to most for greater peace of mind in stressful driving situations.
- The interlocking action of IntelliSipes creates a more rigid tread block, which allows for a reduced starting tread depth leading to lower rolling resistance so you can save fuel without sacrificing safety or longevity.

To date, I have 10,000 miles on these tires. They've seen a rather snowy & icy Michigan winter for the last 3-4 months, and I have had zero issues with sliding off the road or excessive slipping (with traction control & careful driving, knock on wood). I actually decided to write this review on these tires after driving 30 miles to work through 10+ inches of snow today, with lots of icy spots. I made it and drove the entire way with confidence.
While these have excellent traction in the snow & wet, they also seem to do very well for maintaining my MPG. I still average ~31MPG all around driving with these, although that is in the winter & on Michigan winter gas. During the summer, I was still getting my normal ~34MPG all around (non hybrid Corolla) as expected. They do seem quite efficient.
As far as wear, I can't really see any during their first year of use. You will see reviews on tire websites that they have lasted owners anywhere from 30,000 to the full 90,000. Personally, I will be happy if they make it 60,000, as they're not THAT much more expensive than a decent performance tire and are great for my use. If you maintain them properly, you can always use the extra mileage warranty towards a new set anyways!
Michelin generally makes great tires, and I'm very happy with these, both for the performance and for the value. I can't see that there's any reason not to get these tires. Buy with confidence, at whatever retailer you end up going with.
I decided on the Michelin Defender All-Season radial tire for a variety of reasons: 1.) They are the highest rated all-season tire listed in a leading American consumer magazine; 2.) Michelin has a reputation for making some of the best tires in the world; and 3.) (most important): The Michelin Defender's specs lead me to believe that these tires will last a very long time; will provide superior traction on ice and snow; and will give us a quiet and comfortable ride.
Now that I've put about 500 miles on them, I can report that my first impression of my new Michelin Defenders is very positive. They are much quieter on my new car than the old OEM tires were. The ride is much better; my wife and I can both already feel the car making better contact with the road. Steering is more precise, and the car seems practically to glide along the paved roads in our area.
Of course, it's impossible to predict just how long my Michelin Defenders will actually last. They came with a 90,000 tread wear warranty, but I'm guessing they probably won't last quite that long, considering the extremely adverse weather conditions and the rough roads we have here in Maine. I estimate I'll probably get around 50,000-60,000 miles out of them before I'll need to replace them. If they do last that long, I will be very pleased. Highly recommended.
I don't consider myself to be able to adequately judge the relative goodness of tires.
Accordingly, I count on Consumer Reports' testing. These tires came out on top in their recent tests. I like that they have relatively low rolling resistance and overall good handling and braking performance (but again, these are factors that I don't think that I can adequately judge myself -- I am counting on the veracity of Consumer Reports' assessments).
That said, I have had no problems with the two complete sets of Michelin Defenders that I've purchased.
