Michelle Smith developed a crush on her therapist. So she waited until her mother died of cancer so she couldn't defend herself, watched a lot of tacky horror movies and refreshed her Bible knowledge, and made another appointment with him.
She screamed, babbled, gnashed her teeth and swore she had been torn apart and tormented by Satan himself and his followers, then miraculously healed by an angel.
He realised this could be his ticket to fame, so encouraged her to carry on.
The book describes how they spent hours together daily, and that their spouses just didn't understand.
It tells us how she wept, clung to him, persuaded him she needed him to hold her hand, then that she needed him to sit next to her with her head on his shoulder while she burbled about snakes and graves and crucifixes.
They graduate to lying on a mat in his room together while she quotes doggerel she had word perfect recall of Satan reciting at a Black Mass.
When he goes on holiday she phones him constantly, sobbing that she will die.
When he's not at the office, she hangs around there trying to get free advice from the other doctors, and decorating the place with macrame and a tea cosy she makes with her own hands.
She is stalking him basically.
She tells him that she has seen and spoken with Jesus and Mary, and that Mary told her she needed to find him and his ears.
Her description of the Devil tallies precisely with the appearance he is given in the classic horror movie "Night of the Demon".
She lovingly describes the doctors handsome appearance and "big warm hands" repeatedly.
They both got what they wanted. He left his wife and family and married her. His work with her made him famous and rich as the "foremost authority on Satanic Child Abuse".
They made a fortune from publishing the book.
It's all been thoroughly debunked, and there is no evidence to prove anything she said had any connection to reality. There is plenty of evidence that she lied through her teeth.
The book kicked off "Satanic Panic" in the USA, with a lot of deluded credulous people grasping eagerly at the fantasy of evil cults in black robes eating stolen babies and drinking blood rather than accepting the reality that most sexual abuse and violence happens in the family home (or within the Catholic Church, who are presented in "Michelle Remembers" as heroic saviours).
But Michelle got her man! I guess.....love will find a way?
I doubt they lived happily ever after, though. Trapped together by the lies they told and then had to stand by and her obsessive desire for him?
The recasting from heroine and hero of their own horror B movie to trapped participants in a kitchen sink drama must have taken a toll.
Let's hope so.
A lot of innocent people suffered as a result of Satanic Panic. Some fantasies are better left in books and films, not paraded around to steal some man off his wife.
Read this and imagine what you like, but in this case real people suffered as a consequence.
