Jacqueline is a young Creole slave in antebellum New Orleans. An unusual stranger who has haunted her dreams since childhood comes to stay as a guest in her master’s house. Soon after his arrival, members of the household die mysteriously and Jacqueline is suspected of murder. Despite her fear of the stranger, Jacqueline befriends him and he helps her escape. While running from the slave catchers, they meet conjurers, a loup-garou, and a traveling circus of supernatural freaks. She relies on ancestral magic to guide her and finds strength to conquer her fears on her journey.

THIS IS NOT OUR FUTURE.Welcome to The Dystopian States of America: a Charity Anthology Benefiting the ACLU Foundation. This anthology features dystopian views of the future, for America and/or the entire world, should the current regime remain in power. And we use the word “regime” very pointedly because while the executive branch of our government certainly made for a ripe target, our authors were free to draw inspiration from the legislative branch, the judicial branch, local governments, or outside influencers (i.e lobbies, corporations, donors, propagandists, etc.) as well. Many of us have publicly stated that the reality we’re currently living within is scarier and more surreal than anything any of us have ever dreamt up, so this anthology provided the chance to take that ball and run with it.All proceeds from The Dystopian States of America will be donated to the American Civil Liberties Union Foundation. The ACLU Foundation is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit corporation, donations to which fund the ACLU’s litigation and public education efforts. As such, all contributing authors have donated their work to this anthology without payment.TABLE OF CONTENTS:• An Introduction by Christopher Golden• Passage of Life: Stage 1 — Underground by Abby Bechtel• No One Who Runs is Innocent by Bracken MacLeod• Artificial Unintelligence by Linda D. Enter the world of the Monstrous Feminine, where fourteen authors weave a dangerous web of tales for your personal delight and fright. You'll meet an archaeologist who opens her mouth at the worst possible moment and you'll discover the protector of all life who decides the fate of humans. Follow four girls into their town at the height of the witching hour and bump into a peculiar woman who rehabilitates misogynists. Beware of a ravenous grandma and pray for the handyman who trespasses into a creepy house. Turn the pages and you'll unearth the reason a woman seeks comfort in a strange one-night stand, and you'll stumble upon a doctor and the disastrous epidemic ravaging her city. And family--you can't pick them or easily kill them, but never mess with a woman when the red moon rises. What happens when certain women are mistreated? Or when experimental drugs are used on women without their consent? When something wild comes knocking at your door and the ground is smothered with a blanket of snow, what will you do? Don't go floating on the muddy river James to uncover the answers or you just might find you get carried far away!
