The Micro Mini Kickboard is the highest rated scooter for children aged 2-5. Your child will love "surfing the sidewalk" on their Micro Mini, and you will love the years of fun and exercise it provides. The Mini is one of the best value present you will buy your child. The smooth gliding Micro Mini's 3 wheels, low-to-the-ground deck and safe steering all contribute to stability that makes the Mini perfect for pre-schoolers and kindergartners. What makes the Mini unique and fun is the lean-to-steer design; children steer by using their body weight to lean right and left, intuitively learning to lean into a turn, while developing balance and coordination used in many sports. The Micro Mini has the smoothest, quietest ride available thanks to high quality wheels and a flexible fiberglass reinforced deck, which together absorb bumps in the sidewalk. Safety certified by the CPSC, the Micro Mini is recommended for children up to 44lbs. SAFETY - For best protection, we strongly recommend that children wear helmets and knee pads when riding. Non marking wheels allow children to learn to scoot in the safety of your home. However, two months ago, the brake came off seconds before my son went down a fairly steep hill. He was trying to slow down but was putting his foot where the brake should be and couldn't stop. Finally he bailed off the scooter, but it took him a while to figure out that he had to do that. Giving the scooter the benefit of the doubt, I ordered another one. Today as we were riding down the sidewalk, not going fast or doing anything strange, on a scooter only TWO MONTHS OLD, the brake just fell off again. Thank goodness both times my son was fine and wasn't needing to stop for a car or the end of a block.
I just spoke with the company and although they were very helpful and assured me that the brake could be easily replaced, they also told me that this is very likely to happen due to the way it's constructed. They believe that children "shouldn't need the brake" and if they do "they are going too fast". That's fine to say, but if a child is used to using one and trying to stop even at a regular speed as he/she approaches a street, the brake suddenly not being there is going to throw them. I wouldn't expect a four-year-old to have the presence of mind to figure out what to do in time to stop an accident.
Despite my love for this scooter, I am giving it up and going with a different brand. This is a recipe for complete and total disaster and I just hope they change their design before a child gets hurt.
This is the first review I've ever posted on amazon, and I only did it because I truly believe it could save a child's life. Please be careful with this scooter.
Our neighbor's got this scooters for their girls (2 and 4).... and our daughter not just loved it - but easily rode it!
The steering is by leaning - so it took a couple times for the girls to figure out to use their weight and lean into the direction they wanted to go.
But the wheels are super smooth and roll over most surfaces; the girls ride scooters to and from each house in the yard.
Most importantly - the brake! The brake is activated by stepping on the stopper and applying pressure to back wheel. Stopping is simple and SMOOTH - the girls dont fall off or fall over the handlebars - even when trying to stop fast.
It is lightweight and the colors are vibrant... we have the aqua, the neighbors have pink and purple.
It was a night-day difference - the girls ride the scooters daily!
The picture shows the girls "ready to ride"... as stated before - they are 3, 4 (in the middle) and 2 years old.
I want to caution you away from one with color-coordinated hand grips. Only get one with black hand grips. The colored ones are not UV-safe, and after less than a year of use in the backyard the handgrips turned sticky and soft and I had to replace them. They were stored covered some of the time, but they're kids' toys — they're going to get used outside and left out.
We bought two of these — a blue one with black hand grips, which are still perfectly fine, and a red one with red hand grips, which have since been replaced with black handgrips from the local bike shop ($12).
Also, the red platform on this scooter is now an ugly faded orange, but still functional. The blue scooter still looks a perfect blue and is not faded at all.
Also, our twins enjoy running into things and into each other and the colored bits at the fronts of the scooters are all cracked and chipped away, which I think a slight design change could avoid, but I wouldn't take off any stars for that. Just one each for the fading deck and slimy grips.
Update after two years
I'm increasing my star review from three to five — Micro Mini replied to my review and offered replacement parts. I hadn't realized they sell replacement parts at all — http://www.microkickboard.com/mini-micro-parts . This alone I think puts them a cut above other toy manufacturers, that their stuff is durable and you can replace individual parts rather than tossing the whole thing. They replaced the grips gratis, but I still opted for black ones.
