For those people looking to extend the life of an old laptop that only has a PATA controller this is probably the best approach. PATA 2.5" Hard Drives are becoming hard to find, especially the larger sizes. I had a WD 320GB PATA drive die on me and decided to look for a SSD. The problem is there is not much available and they are expensive. This adapter allows one to
add a MSATA device to a computer that only has a PATA controller. It is built precisely for this purpose and comes with all the
necessary hardware for a full size MSATA like what I got or the half-height.

However, it lacks documentation. This is one of the reasons I am giving it only 4 stars. This is the important information that should be provided to anyone who is buying this adapter. The adapter uses a Jmicron JMH330 single chip solution for serial to parallel ATA translation. Per Jmicrons website: It includes the Serial ATA PHY, Link, Transport, and parallel ATA (application layer) controller. The main applications are for serial ATA storage devices connecting to traditional IDE south bridge. For traditional IDE host, the bridge supports master only (a problem if you wish to use this adapter for a second drive).

Features
• 0.18um CMOS technology.
• Compliance with Gen1i/Gen1m of Serial ATA II Electrical Specification 2.6.
• 1.8V and 3.3V power system.
• 25MHz external reference clock.
• 64-pin TQFP ,QFN and LFQP packages.
• Support ATA/ATAPI-7 specification.
• ATA/ATAPI PIO Mode 0, 1, 2, 3, 4.
• ATA/ATAPI Multi-Word DMA Mode 0, 1, 2.
• ATA/ATAPI Ultra DMA Mode 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7.
• ATA/ATAPI PACKET command feature set.
• ATA/ATAPI LBA48 addressing mode associated with 2-byte sector count.
• Serial ATA power saving modes.

I am putting this information here to help someone looking at this product. My only complaint with the Jmicron chip is that it takes it a bit of time to handshake before the computer boots. One will have to first format the MSATA with zeros before trying to use it with this adapter. I did this using Linux because Windows 7 always failed when trying to do the inital format. Also, this bridge chip does not support TRIM. If you are using Windows 7 or 8 you will have to disable TRIM or you will have random crashes. Once I did that, I have not had a BSOD.

Here are my performance comparison using this adapter with a Mushkin MKNSSDAT240GB-DX MSATA drive compared to a 128GB KingSpec 2.5" PATA/IDE SSD using Crystal Disk 3.0.2 (results are side by side for each solution)

KingSpec \ Mushkin+Adapter
Read Write
Seq 71.95 \ 71.43 31.18 \ 68.80
512K 68.89 \ 71.20 33.73 \ 68.18
4K 7.958 \ 17.64 1.434 \ 24.35
4K-QD32 11.78 \ 16.67 1.271 \ 33.33

As you can see the Mushkin+Adapter was always faster especially in the 4K area.

Negatives: Adapter doesn't support TRIM and must be the Master drive in the system which may not work for everyone. There is some trouble shooting to get it working with Windows 7 as discussed above.

Positives: A good solution for aging laptops.

I own a Dell SmartStep 250N (originally a 2.4 GHz P4 processor) with a 2.8 GHZ P4 processor and 4GB of memory. I purchased a Renice 120GB E7 Series 2.5" PATA SSD Solid State Drive - RIM120-PE72 [...] to replace the mechanical PATA HDD, but had compatibility problems. While the computer could detect the device, Windows could not be installed on the device successfully. However, the IDE 44 pin Adapter for mSATA WORKS! I paired it with the Crucial M500 120GB mSATA Internal Solid State Drive CT120M500SSD3 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00BQ8RFAI/ref=oh_details_o00_s00_i00?ie=UTF8&psc=1).

My complaint with the device is with the fit. When the board is attached to the 2.5" housing, the pins stand higher than the housing thus preventing a proper fit into laptops with the housing attached. However, this isn't much of a problem given how light the unit is and SSDs aren't susceptible to shock damage, so I attached the device to the notebook computer without the housing without issue.

mSATA drive does fit in this enclosure but when the mSATA drive with this enclosure is fitted it to the IDE connector of the PC, the PC does not recognize the drive.
