No more guessing about cables and chargers

What a fabulous, easy to use and accurate little device! I have a newish HTC phone which takes about 800-900mA to charge at full blast. I also have an hour commute, and I use the GPS feature for getting around road blocks. Before I bought this meter I would get to work and have only about 75% charge even with a "2A" charger. I even bought a second charger from Spring that was supposed to be 4A. I didn't think all was well, so I bought this meter to diagnose.

Hooked it up at home, read about 820 mA. Hooked it up in the car and I found I had a combination of two issues that i was not expecting. I bought cheap and very short USB cable for the car, to keep the clutter down. I have also bought 2 different "high current" chargers for the car.

What I discovered: The "4A" charger I bought from Sprint put out about 200 mA less than the one I bought on Amazon elsewhere (see my reviews). However I also found out the short, thin USB cable I bought for the car would cut the current even more. So as a result I now use the good charger, plus the good stiff USB cable that is too long, but I get exactly the same current as I do from the wall charger, and when I get to work my phone is 100% charged even if I'm using the GPS all the way there. Well worth it.

I've had many USB cell phone chargers and cords that claim quick charging such as 1 to 2 amps but could never figure out if it was true. With this meter I have been able to accurately identify the best charger/ cord combo to charge my Galaxy S3 and Anker backup battery.

To use the meter: place one end to a USB power source (charger) and the other end into a USB cable (power cord). Set the switch to "A" for mAh or "V" for voltage.

I have found that my Samsung Galaxy S3 will not charge above 700 mAh even with a 2 amp charger and high quality cable with the data pins shorted. With the same exact charger/ cord combo my Anker backup battery will not charge above 1100 mAh.

However, if I use the stock Galaxy S3 cable and my car or home 2 amp charger neither device will charge above 493 mAh. I have no use for data cables since I sync my data wirelessly.

With this meter I have been mixing and matching many cords and chargers. I have tossed chargers that were rated 1 amp and only produced 300 mAh and cords that won't charge higher than 500 mAh. Now that I have this device I will continue my quest to buy a true 2 amp charger.

This meter is a must have if you value your time using your phone or tablet instead of waiting around for it to charge.

Not accurate...avoid.

I decided to try this low cost meter just to see how accurate it was against my Fluke meter and a USB power meter 3x the cost Micro SATA Cables - PC USB 2.0 Cable Device Voltage Current Meter Tester
No contest.

Using a smartphone (60% battery left)and this device it read 790ma/4.65v
Using the Centech it read 1130ma/4.87v (Expected result based on the power supply being rated at 1.2a)
Fluke87 meter confirmed the Centech was within spec.

That's 340ma wasted by this device via cable loss + internal circuit resistance. I measured a 18" amazon branded USB cable and came up with 200ma of loss in it compared to a short 4" one.

For fun, plugged this power meter into the supply and then the centec into it. only 690ma was delivered to the phone by it's meter which agreed with the Centec.

Reversing the above yielded the same results.
I may shorten the integrated USB cord and see if the wire is the culprit.

I learned the Centec dropped about 70ma for operational overhead. Tolerable..

The documentation is very limited. It is not clear what the power like port on the output side is for.

I used this meter to test both the wall charger and a solar charger connected to a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7 2. I was surprised that neither charger would do the 2 A rated. Neither would do more than about 0.8 A according to this meter. I shorted the middle two USB pins (data pins) with a bit of aluminum foil to see if this would effect the charge rate. It did. As an android device this seemed to tell it that only 0.5 A was available and this is what happened in that the charge rate was just below 0.5 A. So I think that the ~0.9 A max rate was because of the tablet and not something that this meter was limiting it to. I don't see anything that would lead me to believe that there is something about this meter that limits it to 1 A rather than the 2 A spec, but I would like to find something that actually charges at 2 A or near that rate to test this meter.

Nevertheless, this device enabled me to figure out what was going on with the solar charger that I had been having a problem with. It made the tablet think it was fully charged after just a few minutes when it was not. With monitoring with this meter I was able to get it to work relatively well. I could see the charge rate on the meter and when the charge rate dropped, unplug the charger, and then plug it in again to get the charging to resume. This meter showed me that the problem with the solar charger was that it was only outputting 4.1 V while the wall charger was outputting 4.9 V. Easy to switch between V and A.

If the documentation was better and I was more confident that this meter was not effecting the result, I would rate it 5 stars.
