Note: Induction motors such as air conditioners, refrigerators, freezers, microwave ovens, and pumps may have a start up surge of 3 to 7 times the continuous rating. Heat generating appliances such as hair dryers and water heaters will have high peak surges as well.
Example: If the microwave oven has peak surge which is 4 times the continuous wattage, the 1200 Watt continuous microwave ovens will have 4 x 1200 Watts = 4800 Watts peak surge. The recommended inverter to run 1200 Watt continuous and 4800 Watt peak surge microwave is 2500/5000 Watt inverter or larger. In general, induction motors require an initial surge of power to start up (“starting load” or “peak load”). My application is running my acoustic duo's sound system at outdoor events with no AC power. I popped the hood to my Honda Accord and hooked up the inverter (don't bother with cigarette lighter connections as they usually have a ~10 amp fuse on them hidden somewhere in your car). I plugged a Yamaha DBR-10 powered speaker (claimed by Yamaha to be 375 watts RMS) and then played Steely Dan through it as loud as I could stand for a little over an hour. The fan never came on, it remained cold to the touch, and the speaker worked flawlessly.
I packed it up in a small plastic storage container and it is ready to be slipped into a gig bag prior to our next no AC gig.
While I know some motors won't run off MSW, I would not use this tiny PSW inverter as it does not have the peak power to spin up a motor that you might expect it has plenty of oomph to run in steady state. I replace my MSW with PSW because the price point was low enough that the extra peace of mind was worth it in my audio application.
in my RV with ease. Cooling fan only runs intermittently and is pretty quiet. So far this unit is great.
